A College of Optical Sciences Newsletter for our Industrial Affiliate Partners

January 30, 2009

Dear Industrial Affiliate Member,

You are cordially invited to attend our Semi-Annual Industrial Affiliates Workshop on February 24 and 25.  The goal of the workshop is to provide a venue for optics companies -- large and small -- to partner with us in educating the next generation of optical scientists and optical engineers.  We also want to provide an environment in which you can visit our laboratories, confer with our faculty members about their research initiatives and expertise, and meet our students -- talented young adults who may someday work for you.

Please let us know that you will attend by sending your RSVP by February 16 at the latest.  You may RSVP easily by registering on-line at www.optics.arizona.edu/Affiliates/2009SpringWorkshop/RegistrationS2009.htm

This year, one of the highlights of the workshop will be a Table Top Company Showcase, scheduled for late afternoon on Tuesday, February 24.  There is a small charge to participate in the showcase, but otherwise, the entire workshop is available to you at no cost.

The agenda also includes optical design project presentations by our seniors.  Those of you who attended the fall workshop last October may recall that our seniors presented their plans for their interdisciplinary capstone projects to you -- and you may also recall that many of you made suggestions and/or offered advice to the students.  During the presentations this month, you will have the opportunity to check on our students' progress.  At this point, the projects will still be a work in progress; they are scheduled to be complete in early May when all engineering students exhibit their capstone projects at UA's Engineering Design Day.

The workshop schedule is still being finalized, but a draft version is on-line at www.optics.arizona.edu/Affiliates/2009SpringWorkshop/Agenda2009Spring.htm

In its final form, the agenda will allow plenty of  time for you to interview our students or invite prospective employees to a presentation about your company.  In order to effectively coordinate your interview and presentation schedules, we ask you to reserve space with Allison Huff, Industrial Affiliates Coordinator, at allison@optics.arizona.edu no later than February 16.  Please make your request for interview and presentation space early because University and college classes will be in session during the workshop dates and we will work around them.  We'll honor your requests on a first-come, first-served basis, so please make your plans as soon as you can!

We look forward to seeing you in February and thank you again for your continued support.

Optical Research AssociatesORA Makes CODE V Upgrade Available to OSC Students. Optical Research Associates, the developer of leading optical design and analysis software packages, CODE V and LightTools, invests in the future of the optical industry through its student licensing program.  The program gives students an opportunity to learn industry-standard software using the same version as the professionals.  A few days ago, ORA sent us the latest version of Code V:  version 10.0 and it is available to College of Optical Sciences students.  For more information about Optical Research Associates, please visit their web site at www.opticalres.com  Thank you ORA for everything you've done for our students for so many years.

FACULTY/PERSONNEL

Kaleidoscopes for Everyone:  Check out this great photo of Eustace Dereniak introducing a group of Michigan first graders to the joys of kaleidoscope-making.  On the same trip to Michigan, he also took over a third-grade class and introduced the students to a variety of science experiments.   The students attend Sterling Elementary School in the Standish-Sterling Michigan area where Eustace grew up.

New Fellows:  Both Charles Falco and Stanley Pau have been elected SPIE Fellows.   SPIE Fellows are Members of distinction who have made significant scientific and technical contributions in the multidisciplinary fields of optics, photonics, and imaging. They are honored for their technical achievement, for their service to the general optics community, and to SPIE in particular.  Lars Furenlid has been elected into the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering's College of Fellows for his contributions to medical and biological engineering.  The College of Fellows represents the top two percent of medical and biological engineers in the field.  Congratulations Charlie, Stanley, and Lars.

CONTINUING EDUCATION

CGH/DOE Workshop:  Tom Milster's acclaimed Computer Generated Holography and Diffractive Optical Element Workshop -- an annual event now -- is scheduled for March 17, 18, and 19, 2009, with optional pre- and post-sessions on March 16 and 20.  The workshop, co-sponsored by SPIE, provides participants with a hands-on learning opportunity for design and fabrication of CGHs/DOEs using the Maskless Lithography Tool.  Through a series of lectures, computer training, and laboratory experiments, participants will be exposed to processes needed to design and build physical devices.  For all the details, including a registration form, please visit www.optics.arizona.edu/Milster/CGH/Workshop2009/home.htm

February Colloquium Speakers:  Affiliates, whenever you are in the area, you are invited to attend our Thursday afternoon Colloquium series, a dynamic forum for the rapid and widespread interchange of ideas, techniques, and research in all areas of optics.  We schedule an impressive list of academic scholars and industry leaders to lead discussions and open the program to questions and comments.  Our February Colloquium lineup includes Mark Kahan of Optical Research Associates on February 5, OSC Professor Rolf Binder  on February 12, and Eric Betzig of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute on February 26.  Colloquium begins with refreshments in the lobby at 3:45 on Thursdays during the academic year and concludes by 5:00.

OUTREACH ACTIVITIES

Women in Optics:  On February 4, our Women in Optics group (OSC's newest UA-recognized club) will hold a general meeting for members and non-members alike.  The WIO group is an organization for men and women interested in outreach, social, and professional activities which encourage women of all ages -- from elementary school through graduate school, in academia and industry -- in optics.  WIO's spring semester activities include plans for monthly brown bag lunches (Ursula Keller visited in January and Susan-Houde-Walter is the scheduled guest speaker for February 19), a conversation with and reception for Mari Edmund of Edmund Optics (an OSC Industrial Affiliate company) on February 17, hosting a workshop at the Expanding your Horizons conference, a math and science conference for middle and high school aged girls in March, outreach to undergraduates at Optical Sciences, a spring social, co-chairing the Tucson Women's Leadership Conference, and participation in the February Industrial Affiliates Workshop and OSC's Graduate Student Recruitment Weekend.

Opti 489/589 Optics Outreach Laboratory: January brought the return of our very popular Optics Outreach Laboratory.  These one-hour credit classes serve as a vehicle for OSC students to practice effective public speaking.  The classes also enable our students to develop their communication skills and present their creative ideas for future presentations.  Upon completion of the class, the students then have opportunities to put their skills to practice by making presentations about careers in optics at high schools throughout Arizona and surrounding states.  Affiliates, if you're interested in scheduling an optics presentation at a high school in or near Tucson, please contact Carl Maes at carl.maes@optics.arizona.edu or 520-626-8837.  Also, if your company has any materials or supplies you would like presented during OSC Outreach demonstrations or any give-aways to be used for our Outreach events, please let Carl know.  Affiliates, your membership contributions partially support the Opti 489/589 Optics Outreach Laboratory -- thank you.
