A College of Optical Sciences Newsletter for our Industrial Affiliate Partners

February 28, 2009

Dear Industrial Affiliate Member,

We would like to express our appreciation to the Industrial Affiliates who joined us at our Spring Workshop on Tuesday and Wednesday, March 24 and 25.  The workshop is always one of the nicest events of the year for us and we hope you enjoyed it as much as we did.

At the workshop, affiliate representatives asked for more information about the interdisciplinary capstone projects that our Seniors complete so we've created a capstone web page for you at www.optics.arizona.edu/Affiliates/seniorcapstone.htm

Representatives also asked us to continue offering two workshops every year, so a Fall workshop is in the planning stages now.  We will let you know as soon as a date is selected and we hope to see you all there.

Affiliates, thank you for your interest in OSC students and for your support.

INDUSTRIAL AFFILIATES

Great Moments From our Spring 2009 Industrial Affiliates Workshop:  Highlights of the workshop included reviews and tutorials on current research topics, laboratory tours, a poster session, a company showcase on the evening of the 24th, informal visits with faculty members and students over snacks and specially-prepared lunches, and one of Charles Falco's famous presentations on optics and art.  Please click on the thumbnails at right for larger images.

Bookham/New Focus:  At the Company Showcase on Tuesday evening, Hyun An was the winner of an IPOD donated by Bookham/New Focus.  Congratulations Hyun and thank you Bookham/New Focus.

Edmund Optics:  Employment interviews are always a critical component of our Industrial Affiliate Workshops.  Susan Tunney of Edmund Optics sends the following:  Edmund Optics® is pleased to announce that Michael Humphreys (U of A Class of 2009) will be joining its staff in Barrington, NJ as part of its Engineering Leadership Program for 2009.  Edmund Optics' Engineering Leadership Program has enjoyed an overwhelming response since its inception and is thrilled to announce the hiring of Mr. Humphreys.  “The Engineering Leadership Program continues to be a critical element in our advanced engineering programs, targeting the top talent in the optics industry,” commented Sam Sadoulet, VP of Engineering for Edmund Optics.

Breault Research Organization:  In keeping with their long tradition of generosity to OSC, the good people at BRO are offering their acclaimed ASAP Tutorial to OSC faculty and students -- at no charge -- on a space-available basis.  This is the same course completed each year by hundreds of optical engineers in industry. Seating is limited to sixteen participants and each attendee will have their own ASAP workstation for hands-on examples and class exercises.  Every attendee who completes the course will receive an official certificate of completion.  Thank you, BRO -- you are great!

STUDENTS, FACULTY, AND STAFF

Graduate Student Recruitment Weekend:  This week, on Friday and Saturday March 6 and 7, our most promising and talented grad student applicants -- the best of the best -- will be our guests at our annual Graduate Student Recruitment Weekend.  The purpose of the weekend is trifold;  first, the visit offers our recruits an opportunity to become acquainted with our current graduate students and faculty members; second, it allows us to showcase our academic and research programs to the recruits; and third, it gives our recruits an opportunity to sample the best that OSC, UA, and Tucson have to offer.  The two-day agenda includes academic program information sessions, research presentations by OSC faculty members, campus, Meinel building, and lab tours, a panel discussion, individual meetings with faculty members, informal get-togethers with our current grad students, and of course, plenty of the best food that Tucson has to offer.  The 22 invited students represent some of the best schools in the U.S., including the University of Rochester, MIT, Rice, Carnegie Mellon, Rose-Hulman, Case Western Reserve, Duke, Cornell, and Cal-Tech.

Bob Norwood:  Robert Norwood has been promoted to Professor with tenure, effective immediately.  Congratulations, Bob.

Randall Marks, David Mathine, Jim Schwiegerling, Gholam Peyman, and Nasser Peyghambarian:  From a February 24 article by Laura Mgrdichian in Physics/Physics at PhysOrg.com   Randall, David, Jim, Gholam, and Nasser have created a fluid-based opthalmic lens in which the amount of fluid can be constantly adjusted to provide customized eye correction.  The lens may one day be incorporated into the tools that eye doctors use to determine prescription strength.  Similar lenses have been produced for telescopes to provide an adjustable field of view and zoom, removing the need to mechanically move optical components and yielding smaller, lighter telescopes. The group has taken these principles and applied them to opthalmics.  Citation:  Randall Marks, David L. CONTINUING EDUCATION

CGH/DOE Workshop:  Tom Milster's acclaimed Computer Generated Holography and Diffractive Optical Element Workshop -- an annual event now -- is scheduled for March 17, 18, and 19, 2009, with optional pre- and post-sessions on March 16 and 20.  The workshop, co-sponsored by SPIE, provides participants with a hands-on learning opportunity for design and fabrication of CGHs/DOEs using the Maskless Lithography Tool.  Through a series of lectures, computer training, and laboratory experiments, participants will be exposed to processes needed to design and build physical devices.  The Workshop is co-sponsored by SPIE and the College of Optical Sciences.  Questions?  Please contact Tom Milster at milster@arizona.edu or Juliet Hughes at juliet@optics.arizona.edu  For all the details, including a registration form, please visit www.optics.arizona.edu/Milster/CGH/Workshop2009/home.htm

Colloquium Videos:  We have a Website dedicated to our Colloquium series.  Please visit http://www.optics.arizona.edu/Colloquium/default.htm  Our Colloquium videos do not require a password -- everyone is welcome to view them.

Colloquium Speakers:  Affiliates, whenever you are in the area, you are invited to attend our Thursday afternoon Colloquium series, a dynamic forum for the rapid and widespread interchange of ideas, techniques, and research in all areas of optics.  We schedule an impressive list of academic scholars and industry leaders to lead discussions and open the program to questions and comments.

Colloquium begins with refreshments in the lobby at 3:45 on Thursdays during the academic year and concludes by 5:00.

  • March 5:  Alan Willner, University of California Department of Electrical Engineering Systems, will present Optical Communications:  Innovations (and their needs) Abound.

  • March 12:  No Colloquium

  • March 19:  No Colloquium

  • March 26:  Joseph Ford, USCD, is the scheduled speaker.
