A College of Optical Sciences Newsletter for our Industrial Affiliate Partners

May 29, 2009

Dear Industrial Affiliate Members,

With our May 2009 Commencement a fond memory and our undergraduate students pursuing their own interests over the summer, we are all looking forward to a quiet couple of months.  At OSC, most faculty members and staff remain at work over the summer, preparing new class material, completing special projects, working with graduate students, publishing research results, and -- later on -- gearing up for the new students who will begin to arrive at the beginning of August.

Once again Affiliates, thank you for your interest in our students and for your support.  We hope you and your families have a wonderful summer filled with good times and good friends.

STUDENTS, FACULTY, AND STAFF

UA's Engineering Design Day:  On May 5, our seniors showcased their year-long capstone projects at UA's 2009 Engineering Design Day .  Photos of their projects, teams, and sponsors are on our Web site at www.optics.arizona.edu/News/2009Newsletters/EngineeringDesignDay2009.htm   It's reachable from our home page -- look for the link to Senior Capstone Projects on the right side of the page.

Affiliates, you may already know that Engineering Design Day displays and demos Senior Capstone Projects from UA's many engineering disciplines:  interdisciplinary, aerospace, agricultural & biosystems, and chemical & environmental.   Teams of judges examine each project and the very best receive awards.  This year, there were 65 projects competing for 13 awards.  OSC students took home three awards for their work:

Best Overall Design, Runner Up was awarded to the team of Hosain Baghen, Alexandru Dospinoiu, Adoum Mahamat, Jacob Rader, and Daniel Wu for their project titled Multiscale Biaxial Opto-Mechanical Device.  Their project sponsor was Soft Tissue Biomechanics Laboratory and the prize was co-sponsored by Lockheed Martin and BAE Systems.

A Team Leadership Award (1 of 2) went to Brigid Marshall.  She worked with Oscar Martinez, Antony Mills, and Nickolas Cota on their project titled Gravity Aligned Collimator.  OSC's James Burge was the project sponsor and Rincon Research sponsored the prize.

The Fish Out of Water Award was given to Katia Shtyrkova.  She worked with Matthias Whitney, Leslie Wu, and John Armstrong on their project titled Stochastic Resonance.  Lockheed Martin was the project sponsor and Kristy Pearson sponsored the prize.

Congratulations students and thank you sponsors!

The event was attended by UA students, faculty members, proud parents, high school students, industry sponsors, and the press.  Local coverage appeared in the Arizona Daily Star, the Arizona Daily Wildcat, and the Tucson Citizen.

If you or your company is interested in sponsoring a project or an award for next year, please contact Martha Ostheimer by the end of June at 520-621-9921.

Jack's Legacy Continues:  Jack and Sandra Gaskill visited OSC last week to present 2009 Jack D. Gaskill Endowed Scholarships to three OSC undergraduate students:  Michael Gaj, Phat Lu, and Brittany Lynn.  The scholarship honors Professor Jack D. Gaskill, former Associate Director for Academic Affairs at Optical Sciences, where he played a key role in shaping the graduate curriculum, starting the undergraduate program, recruiting students, and mentoring students as they pursued their degree in Optical Sciences.  In 1999, he commemorated his retirement from teaching by contributing a generous leadership gift to endow an undergraduate student Scholarship in Optical Sciences.   When Jack's former students heard about it, they joined him in the spirit of the endowment and contributed generously to the fund.  Thank you Jack and Sandra Gaskill, and OSC alumni and friends, for making the Jack D. Gaskill Endowed Scholarship a reality.  And congratulations Michael, Phat, and Brittany.

Good News from Meredith Hay, UA Executive Vice President and Provost:  Following Robert Norwood's promotion to Professor with Tenure last February, we have just received word that Hong Hua has been promoted to Associate Professor with Tenure, Franko Kueppers has been promoted to Associate Professor with Tenure, Stanley Pau has been granted Tenure, and Scott Tyo has been promoted to Professor with Tenure.  These four appointments are effective for the 2009-2010 academic year.  Congratulations Hong, Franko, Stanley, and Scott.

From the Desk of Jerzy Rozenblit, Raymond J. Oglethorpe Professor and Head, ECE:  Please join me in congratulating our freshly-retired Professor [joint with Optical Sciences], Robin Strickland, on his Outstanding Faculty Award given by the Honors College.

OTHER OPPORTUNITIES

From the Desk of Mark Bolden, U.S. Air Force:  The U.S. Air Force has just completed an upgrade to the infrastructure on a 1.6m telescope, which allows for a very "plug and play" interface for new sensors.  If you or any of your colleagues have an interest in performing new sensor experiments, (i.e. they would be what we call a VE - Visiting Experimenter) please contact Mark Bolden at mark.bolden@maui.afmc.af.mil  A formal proposal is not needed upfront.  An informal email about the idea will be sufficient to start with. It may also be possible to figure out how work could tie in with the ongoing R&D efforts on the 1.6m site. This is part of the USAF effort to increase collaborations with the Educational Community. Final revisions on the ICD (Interface Control Document) are currently underway, and this will be made available once cleared through AF Public Affairs.

CONTINUING EDUCATION

Optics Camp, June 8 - 12, 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m:  Continuing ed isn't just for those who've already completed a degree program -- it's for kids too.  Once again, by popular demand, we're offering our Optical Sciences Summer Camp for students in grades 9 through 12.  The curriculum varies a bit from year to year, but always shows students that optics is an integral part of the technology that enables them to view DVDs, take pictures with their cell phones, drive at night, save and share information on CDs, enjoy fantastic special effects in movies, create virtual realities and much, much more.  The camp is held in the College of Optical Sciences and is taught by Optical Sciences faculty members and graduate students.  For more information or to enroll your child, please visit http://outreachcollege.arizona.edu/youth/summer_camp.html#optical
