A College of Optical Sciences Newsletter for our Industrial Affiliate Partners

August 31, 2009

Dear Industrial Affiliate Members,

Classes started on August 24, so our students have returned and we are all back in the swing of things.  This year, we welcomed 70 graduate students and 53 undergraduate students into our academic program.

Our Colloquium, Community Speakers, and Sports Friday activities are beginning, so please take a look at the Calendar events for September below.  If you'll permit us to brag about our students for a moment, our Women in Optics group and our Students Optics Chapter -- both fairly new entities -- have developed strong and active student leadership and are sponsoring quite a number of our calendar activities.

Affiliates, you are all  invited to attend our Semi-Annual Industrial Affiliates Workshop to be held on Tuesday October 27 and Wednesday October 28.

The agenda is still in the planning stages and will include -- but is not limited to -- faculty and graduate student research presentations, open laboratories, escorted tours, optical design project presentations by our seniors, and plenty of opportunities for you to visit informally with our students and faculty members at coffee breaks and lunches.

The workshop schedule also includes time for you to give company presentations and interview prospective employees if you wish.  To make arrangements, please contact Allison Huff, Industrial Affiliates Coordinator, at allison@optics.arizona.edu  Please contact her early as University and college classes will be in session and we will make our plans around them.

We hope you will plan to attend and we look forward to seeing you in October.  You may RSVP by registering on-line at http://www.optics.arizona.edu/Affiliates/2009FallWorkshop/RegistrationF2009.htm  If you have questions or would like more information, please contact Allison at allison@optics.arizona.edu

We look forward to seeing you in October and thank you again for your interest in our students and for your support.

A Summer Optics Program for K-12 Teachers:  From Meredith Kupinski.  This summer, in conjunction with CIAN, the Center for Integrated Access Networks, the College of Optical Sciences hosted six Arizona high school and community college science teachers as guest researchers.  The goal of this program is for science teachers to learn about optical science research and to translate what they've learned into their classrooms. Thanks to those that attended the RET Poster Session. Everyone can expect an invitation in the Spring Semester when these OSC-affiliated teachers return to tell us about the execution of their lesson plan.  Thank you to the OSC faculty that participated in the ROCKET program:  Russell Chipman, Mahmoud Fallahi, Hyatt Gibbs, Franko Kueppers, Matthew Kupinski, and Robert Norwood.  ROCKET is an NSF-funded Research Experience for Teachers (RET) program.
