7/06

ENGR 498A. Senior Capstone (3) I. Students will work in cross-disciplinary teams to solve industry-sponsored real-world design problems using the design process. Teaming, design process, design concept, design proposal. ENGR 498A and ENGR 498B must be taken in consecutive semesters; they are usually offered in the fall.

Course Outline:

The objectives (more detailed objectives listed on course website) of this course are to guide the student in:

  • applying a systematic design methodology to a realistic, open-ended, multidisciplinary design problem from start to finish;

  • applying approaches for developing innovative solutions;

  • applying math, science, and engineering fundamentals in a design process;

  • working effectively on teams with engineers from multiple disciplines;

  • using project management tools effectively; and

  • communicating to a broad audience via both written and oral reports.

Instructors:

Dr. Reid Bailey (lead)
AME N513; 626-2887, rrbailey@u.arizona.edu

Dr. Meredith Aronson (project coordinator)
Harshbarger 304C, 626-3774, maronson@arizona.edu

Grading Policy:

See Toolkit. Sixty percent of report/presentation grades relate to content, 40% is for communication.

Attendance Policy:

Owing to the team component in this course and the lack of individual accountability on specific topics, attendance is a must.  To account for this, you will be given a choice on the first day of class. Attendance sign-in sheets or 10-minute pop quizzes.  Quizzes will be graded as satisfactory/unsatisfactory. If you miss an attendance sheet without an excuse, you will get a mark. OR If you miss a quiz or perform unsatisfactorily on a quiz, you will get a mark.  Details as to how this will affect your grade are in the Toolkit.

Deliverables:

Several small homework assignments, four individual essays plus the following project-related deliverables:

  • Problem Statement and Requirements Document

  • Concept Review (not in class: with clients and mentor)

  • Concept Review Analysis

  •  Technical Specification Document

  • Detailed Design Review (oral)

  • Design Proposal

  • Engineering Notebook (including Monthly Progress Reports)

Listserv:

After teams are formed, sign up for the appropriate listserv: either ame412a or engr498. To do so, send an email to listserv@listserv.arizona.edu from the main account you use with the following text in the body of the email:
