OPTI 421L/521L. Introductory Optomechanical Engineering Laboratory (1).
Pre- or Co-requisite class: OPTI 421/521.

The course provides hands on experience to complement the lecture material in the Introductory Optomechanical Engineering course (OPTI 421/521). 

This class consists of one 50 minute class and one 3-hour lab session per week.

  1. Kinematics
  2. Alignment – Line of sight – laser – AT – PSM – Quad cell – Surface plate flatness
  3. Centering and roundness  Lens assembly in a cell
  4. Introduction to precision metrology – mics – types of equipment and care of
  5. Inspection of optical components – per ISO also prisms and radii – reverse engineering
  6. Machining – material removal and shaping methods
  7. Engineering materials – Modulus CTE density, etc. and coatings
  8. Adhesives and fasteners 
  9. Vibration
  10. Stages, linear and rotary
  11. Motion control
  12. Over constraints and distortion
  13. Optical mounting
  14. System alignment

Grading Criteria  

Undergraduate:  

  • Lab reports         50 %

  • Lab Notebooks    50 %

Graduate:

  • Lab reports         40 %

  • Lab notebooks    40 %

  • Graduate students will be required to write one additional report.   20%
