Course Outline:

  • Geometrical Optics and Optical Design Review. Describing optical systems. Ray tracing. Wavefront aberration function. Point spread function. Example optical system ray trace.

  • Polarization Ray Tracing. Describing polarized light.  Entering polarization properties. Fresnel equations. Multilayer film polarization. Anisotropic materials and interfaces. Cascading polarization effects through systems.  Polarization aberration function.

  • Polarization Aberrations Examples. Uncoated lens. Microscope objective.  Combinations of folding mirrors. Cassegrain telescope. Fresnel rhomb. Corner cubes. Waveplates. Polarizing beam splitters. Wavelength and angle of incidence dependence.

This lab class supplements OPT 586 by providing instruction in the ASAP optical analysis program’s polarization features.  Weekly assignments will calculate the polarization aberrations of basic optical systems.
