Donor FAQs

How will my gift be used and what impact will my gift make?
Optical Sciences maintains its worldwide reputation because of our ability to attract and support the world's best students, faculty members, and researchers. With your generous support, we will continue to improve our curriculum, support our faculty members, and enhance the learning environment for our students.

Why can’t Optical Sciences support itself on tuition dollars?
Tuition dollars comprise only a small portion the total university budget and the dollars aren’t specific to any respective college, school, or unit on campus. Therefore, only a small portion of the monies collected help support Optical Sciences.

Why is it important that Optical Sciences be rated as the top optical sciences teaching and research venue in the world?
With worldwide recognition come the best and brightest students, groundbreaking research initiatives, and the most talented faculty. Regardless of your affiliation, be it alumnus or supporter, you can take pride in knowing you are part of what makes this college the best in the world.

I heard about the Industrial Affiliates program and I'm wondering why can’t Optical Sciences support itself on those membership fees?
Every dollar counts and the Industrial Affiliates have been incredibly generous. However, their generosity has limits and we must constantly find new and recurring sources of funding. Every dollar donated makes a difference.

Do you ask Optical Sciences employees and faculty members to donate?
Yes. The UA Cares program, developed in partnership between the University and the University of Arizona Foundation is one of the ways for faculty and staff to “give back” to Optical Sciences. However, Optical Sciences also conducts an annual fundraising program, the October Support Campaign, that includes asking all Optical Sciences employees to make a donation.

What do you mean by a naming opportunity?
A naming opportunity refers to the ability for you or your company to prominently display your name next to a teaching laboratory, conference room or other such room in recognition of your support. We have various levels of giving available based on the location. Take a look at the Naming Opportunities link for more detailed information.

Why am I asked to donate to the University of Arizona and Optical Sciences so many times during the year?
Every effort is made to try and limit the number of times you are asked to “give back” to the University and in particular to Optical Sciences. However, some fundraising campaigns are conducted independently and it is possible that you might be asked to give by different units at the university. To the extent possible we will try to limit how many times you are asked to give and by whom. The Optical Sciences Director of Development is able to discuss your concerns and my possibly be able to assist with limiting how many times you are asked to give during the year.
