Annual and Endowed Scholarships

Privately funded scholarships have helped hundreds of the best and brightest students earn their degrees from the College of Optical Sciences.

In the words of John B. Hayes, Ph.D. 1984, founder of the John B. Hayes and Jane C. Quale Endowed Scholarship in Optical Sciences, “Our high-tech world would not be possible without the understandings and technology enabled by optical science. It is a tremendous privilege to support the future generations of optical scientists and engineers ...“

Please consider a donating to the college’s general scholarship fund or establishing an annual or endowed scholarship in your name or the name of someone you wish to honor.

Annual Scholarships

An annual scholarship reflects a belief in, and support for, higher education. It can be established with a minimum gift of $2,500 and a pledge of commitment for five years or longer. Annual scholarships can be given in the name of an organization, foundation, corporation or individual.

Endowed Scholarships

An endowment is a permanent fund that represents a legacy of your support and belief in the college. You may establish an endowment with a minimum gift of $10,000. Endowments remain in perpetuity; the principal amount is invested and students are awarded the earnings annually or as you intend.

Endowed scholarships can be established to honor an individual, organization, corporation or foundation — even as a memorial.

FoTO Scholarships

In March 2006, nearly 100 faculty, alumni, administrators and friends of the College of Optical Sciences gathered to launch a new fundraising initiative: the Friends of Tucson Optics Graduate Scholarships in Optical Sciences, with the goal of supporting as many as 30 graduate students through separate endowed scholarship funds.

The FoTO scholarship program was established for two reasons: to help young people of exceptional promise reach their full potential through education and to help ensure the future of Arizona's Optics Valley by enrolling the world's most promising scholars in our internationally renowned graduate degree programs.

Scholarship recipients are selected annually by a committee of OSC faculty and friends of Tucson optics. Committee members also serve as supervisors, counselors and mentors.

Contributions to an Existing Scholarship

Gifts are welcomed (and encouraged!) to supplement existing College of Optical Sciences scholarships. Your support will help to strengthen the financial assistance that is offered to student recipients.

Establishing a Scholarship

Scholarships can be funded from gifts of cash, bonds, stocks, real estate, bequests, insurance, trusts and other legal instruments. As the donor, you decide: the basic terms of the award; the award level; who is eligible for the scholarship and how the recipient is selected. We will work with you to maximize the utility of a gift and fulfill your wishes for the award.

Current Scholarships

The College of Optical Sciences has been extraordinarily fortunate to have received support from alumni, faculty and friends to support our academically talented students. Listed below are the endowed and annual scholarships we are currently able to offer our undergraduate and graduate students through their generosity:

  • Arthur G. (Jerry) and Beatrice DeBell Memorial Scholarship in Optical Sciences
This scholarship was established in honor of Arthur G. (Jerry) DeBell and his wife, Beatrice, by associates of the College of Optical Sciences.

  • David H. Cushing Endowed Scholarship in Optical Sciences
This scholarship is made possible by Helen Cushing in honor of her late husband, David, in loving memory of their life together and his passion for thin films technology

  • Eustace L. Dereniak Family and Friends Endowed Scholarship in Optical Sciences
This scholarship is offered courtesy of generous donations from Eustace L. Dereniak, his wife, Barbara, his daughters, Teresa and Andreana, and many of the students who have valued his dedication to their education.

  • Jack D. Gaskill Endowed Scholarship in Optical Sciences
This endowed scholarship is due to the generous leadership gift from professor emeritus Jack D. Gaskill to commemorate his retirement from teaching, as well as contributions from OSC alumni and friends.

  • James M. Palmer Endowed Scholarship in Optical Sciences
This scholarship honors professor emeritus James M. Palmer, who helped establish OSC's undergraduate program before his death in 2007.

  • John B. Hayes and Jane C. Quale Endowed Scholarship in Optical Sciences
This scholarship is offered thanks to the generous contributions of John B. Hayes, Jane C. Quale and their family.

  • John E. Greivenkamp Endowed Scholarship in the College of Optical Sciences

This scholarship is offered in honor of John E. Greivenkamp, professor of optical sciences and of ophthalmology and founding curator of the Museum of Optics, by his collaborator and friend David Steed.

  • John Tipton Scholarship in Optical Sciences
This scholarship, established by Sean McCafferty, honors all men and women who accept duty and consequence and who dedicate their lives to making positive change in the world, their country or their community and bears the name of U.S. Army Captain John E. Tipton, who was killed in an explosion while conducting combat operations in Iraq in 2004
