Welcome to the

Fred A. Hopf Library

About the Library

The Fred Hopf Library supports the academic and research interests of the students, faculty and staff of the College of Optical Sciences.  With the support of the College's Industrial Affiliates, the College provides books, CDs and videotapes.  Individual faculty members and alumni also make numerous personal donations.  The thoughtfulness and generosity of all these individuals have made it possible for many more books to be added to the collection than would have been possible otherwise.

The Fred Hopf Library is located in Room 401 of the College of Optical Sciences' Meinel Building--next to the Academic Programs Office in the old building.

Access to Books and Journals

All materials are available to everyone, for use in the library, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.  College of Optical Sciences graduate students, faculty and staff who have access to the building after normal working hours also have access to the library 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Honor System

The Fred Hopf Library operates on the honor system.  To preserve the collection for current and future use, please follow these requirements:

  • use journals, and reference & reserve books in the library--they should never be removed;
  • sign legibly for the materials you borrow;
  • return borrowed materials when they are due--borrowed books are due at the end of every semester or when they are recalled.

Borrowing Privileges

Borrowing privileges are extended to College of Optical Sciences faculty, staff, and students.  No library card or special registration is required.

Borrowing Privileges for Visiting Scholars and Guests

Visiting scholars, guests, including students from other departments who are taking an optics class, and members of the general public, may occasionally borrow a book for two weeks if that item is not available from the Science Library.  Special registration is required.  Please contact the librarian on duty or Barbara Myers in the Academic Programs Office, Room 403.

View Your Account

You can view your circulation record on the library's web site by giving the last six digits of your CatCard number to the librarian or Barbara Myers in the Academic Programs Office, Room 403.  When your account is activated, you can enter the last 6 digits of your CatCard number to view your record.  Use this feature to find out what books you have checked out and when they are due.

BOOKS

Any book not in the reserve or reference section of the library may be borrowed.  To borrow a book, remove the card from the pocket.  Legibly sign and date the card, then leave it in the small card-box on the librarian's desk.

Book Return

Books must be returned or renewed at the end of every semester.  To return books, leave them in the wooden return box on the wall just inside the library door.  Please do not re-shelve books, or loan them to others.  In order to clear your account, the return or renewal of your book needs to be processed by the librarian.

Responsibility for Returning Books

The person who signed the book out of the library is responsible for returning it.  If the book is given to someone else, the responsibility for returning it is not transferred, but remains with the original borrower.  If the book is not returned when requested, the original borrower must pay for the replacement.

Book Recall

To borrow a book on loan to someone else, complete the “Recall Form” found on the librarian's desk and submit it to the librarian on duty or email your request for recall to the librarian.  If you email a request, be sure to include your name, as well as the title, author, year published and call number.  Recalled books must be returned within 72 hours.

Book Renewal

Books may be brought to the library for renewal, or a renewal request can be emailed to the librarian.

New Books

New books are shelved in call number locations as soon as possible after receipt.

Reference Books, Reserve Books and Periodicals

These items must remain in the library at all times.

CDs and VIDEOTAPEs

Loan Period

CDs of classes taught this semester are available for 24-hour loan.  All other CDs and tapes may be borrowed for 3 days.

Borrowing Procedures

CD and Videotape Return

To return videos or CDs, leave them in the wooden book return box inside the library door.  Please do not re-shelve videos or CDs--records need to be made that the video or CD was returned to clear your account.  Please rewind video tapes before returning them to the library.

Missing or Damaged Tapes or CDs

Please contact the librarian if tapes or CDs are missing or damaged.  If the librarian is not available in the library please email librarian@optics.arizona.edu.

REFERENCE, RESERVE & STUDY MATERIALS

Reference and Reserve Books

Reference and reserve bookshelves are visible northeast of the librarian's desk and these books are all labeled with bright pink stickers.  Reference and reserve books must remain in the library.  Please do not remove them for any reason.  Duplicate copies of most reserve books have also been placed on reserve at the UA's Main or Science Library.

Prelim Exam Materials

Copies of previous written prelim exams are shelved near the reference and reserve books.  Student-donated prelim study material is also included in this location.  These materials are unique and not replaceable.  The materials are to be used only in the library.

Class Notes and Homework

Class notes are shelved in black binders at the end of the reference and reserve book section.  These materials must also be used in the library.  Please do not remove them for any reason.  If copies are needed, please contact the instructor.

JOURNALS

Journals cannot be loaned.  They must remain in the library at all times.  Bound volumes of core-collection journals are shelved alphabetically.

Indexes to Journals

Some journals issue a cumulative index each year or every few years.  These are bound in a separate volume and shelved with the journal.  Other journals publish an annual index inside the December issue each year.  Numerous indexes are available online through the Subject Guides in  University of Arizona Libraries Catalog (SABIO).

Electronic Journals

Many journals are now available online with full-text access.  Please access these journals with the computers in the library.  Select Online Journals from the Fred A. Hopf Library home page.

If you are OFF-CAMPUS, clicking on the title will not allow you to access the journal.  You must go to the database that the journal is located in (e.g. Science Direct) and log in with your CatCard number.  These databases are also linked on this page.  There are several journals (including OSA journals) that are not yet available off-campus.  We will add more links as they become available.

Conference Proceedings

Proceedings of the IEEE, 1963-2001, are bound and available in the Fred A. Hopf Library.   The library owns some volumes of the Proceedings of SPIE.   All SPIE Proceedings are available at the University of Arizona’s Science and Engineering Library.  Full-text papers from SPIE conference proceedings and journals can be found online through the SPIE Digital LibraryThis collection is complete starting at Volume 3245, 1998.  Proceedings for other conferences are shelved with the journals.

CALL NUMBERS AND CARD CATALOG
