Dr. Serguei Stepanov of the Centro de Investigación Científica de Educación Superior de Ensenada Department of Optics will present Wave Mixing via Spatial Hole Burning in Er-Doped Fibers.

We Welcome Two New Industrial Affiliate Companies to OSC

Alfrieda Harding
The Optical Sciences Center's former receptionist, Alfrieda Harding, died on September 1, 2004.  Funeral services were held on September 8 at Heaven Bound AME Church.  Ms. Harding is survived by her daughter, Frieda Baker, two granddaughters, Francina Baker and Faleesha (Derek) Silkert; one grandson, Leonard Baker, Jr. and several great-grandchildren and other relatives.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Heaven Bound AME Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 32813, Tucson, Arizona 85715.

Ryan Goodwin
OSC PhD candidate Eric Goodwin and his wife, Sam, are celebrating the arrival of their first baby:  a girl named Ryan.  She was born on September 12 and weighed in at a very nice 8 pounds even.  Eric tells us that both Ryan and her mom are doing great.

Arash Mafi, Research Associate, ACMS and OSC, will present Microstructured Fibers: The Road from Theory to Practice.  Abstract:  We show how microstructured fibers are studied using various numerical tools at the ACMS (Arizona Center for Mathematica Sciences). We discuss a few exotic properties of these optical fibers and explain how a theory-experiment collaboration between ACMS and Optical Sciences Center has resulted in some novel microstructured fiber lasers.

Optical Engineer.  Optical Systems Division at 3M Corporation is looking for an Optical Engineer to perform new product development for the LCD industry.   Candidate will be expected to be proficient in the optical principles of non-imaging illumination systems.  Position provides exciting opportunities in the areas of refraction, diffraction, multi-layer thin films, diffusers, and polarization control.  Candidate is expected to work closely with business and manufacturing teams.   A degree in the field of optics/physics is required.  Desirable job skills include extension laboratory experience in characterization and prototyping of optical designs.  A familiarity with LCD technology is preferred.  Additional requirements include excellent laboratory, organizational and communication skills.  If you would like to attend the presentation or sign up to interview for an internship opportunity, stop by the OSC academic office to sign-up.  Please be sure to submit your resume for the fall 2004 student resume book, if you have not already done so.

Optical - Laser Engineer.  Ventura County, CA.  I need a Optical/Laser Engineer -Ventura County , S. CA - Full time Permanent FTE position.  Optical/Laser Engineer - Responsibilities: Seeking a creative electro-optic engineer who has practical experience in the testing of laser range finders and/or laser target designators. Experience with optical system design or testing is required. This position involves the design of new products & the support and improvement of existing product line. Experience in the application of optics, military laser systems, fiber optics, infrared imaging systems, electronics and general product engineering principles will all be considered as a plus. Applicant will participate in the design of new electro-optic test equipment, which utilizes infrared laser technology.  Requirements: B.S./M.S. Engineering/Physics w/7 years + exp. in same or similar capacity is desired.  This is a Full time Permanent FTE position with our client in Ventura County , S. CA.  Salary is commensurate with experience, with standard benefits. Very stable and fast-growing company with a great working atmosphere.
