Watt's Up College of Optical Sciences News for Thursday, June 1, 2006
Today -- June 1, 2006 -- Special Seminar -- 1:00 p.m. -- Meinel 701 Professors K. Saito and A.J. Ikushima of Toyota Technological Institute's Research Center for Advanced Photon Technology will present Relevance of Structure to Physical Properties of Silica Glass. Masud Mansuripur is the OSC host. Abstract: Silica glass is the very best material for studying fundamental aspects of amorphous materials because of its simple chemical form, superb light transmission, wide transparent wavelength range, and for many other reasons. At the same time, silica glass is the key material for photonics and other optical applications. The present research group has been focusing on the relevance between various physical properties and the random structure of silica glass, and structural relaxation in silica glass under various conditions. We will talk about our recent results.
Coming Up -- June 5, 2006 -- Special Seminar -- 11:00 a.m. -- Meinel 701 Professor Eugeny B. Alexandrov, Russian Academy of Sciences Ioffe Physico-Technical Institute, is the speaker. Dr. Alexandrov is a specialist in atomic spectroscopy and its application to metrology of time and magnetic fields. He is known for his early demonstration of quantum beats related to interference of atomic states. Hyatt Gibbs is the OSC host. Abstract: Optically pumped magnetometers, which use atomic vapors to probe external magnetic field and Kastler-type optical pumping to make the vapor magnetically sensitive, are known to be, at present, the most sensitive and precise tools for measuring low magnetic fields. Recent achievements in this area will be discussed. The main attention will be paid to the maser-like potassium-based magnetometer, which combines in a unique way three fundamentally important features: the highest sensitivity (of about 10 fT/Hz1/2), high baseline stability (better than 10 pT), and a relatively fast response (up to 100 Hz). This device is specially designed for scalar precise measurements of the Earth magnetic field. Several examples of application of the high-precision magnetometry will be presented.

Taylor Hobson Precision announces an exhibition on non-contact and stylus measurement techniques hosted by the College of Optical Sciences. Everyone is welcome to drop by this free informative event any time between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. The location is Meinel 465: Franko Kueppers' new lab. Each morning, from 9:00 a.m. to noon, the event will feature a conference on Surface Metrology for Precision Optics. Topics are: June 6: Aspheric Profilometry June 7: Surface Finish Measurements Using CCI 6000 Interferometers, and June 8: Fusion Software: Special Applications, Steep Aspheric Profiles, and Larger Than 200 mm Diameter Lenses. Space is limited, so to register for any or all of the conferences, please contact Alex Vasiliu at avasiliu@taylorhobson.us without delay. The event will also feature up-close, hands-on instrument demonstrations using coherence correlation and phase grating interferometry for high accuracy non-contact and stylus-based applications. In conjunction with the event, Taylor Hobson will offer a risk free opportunity for you to examine your manufacturing process. Private sessions, for confidential measurement studies, are available on a limited basis and must be scheduled in advance. For additional information, to register for a conference, or to schedule a private demonstration session, please contact Alex Vasiliu at Taylor Hobson Precision by telephone at 310-544-9749 or by e-mail at avasiliu@taylorhobson.us For more information about Taylor Hobson Precision, please visit their Web site at http://www.taylor-hobson.com/index.asp

Optical Engineer. Glimmerglass Networks. Hayward CA. Glimmerglass is a leading provider of optical switches based on 3D MEMS technology. We are seeking either a mid level or senior level Optical Engineer/Scientist to join our engineering department. As a part of our team you will specify, design, and test micro lens arrays, fiber arrays and other optical components for our current and future switch products. In addition, you will work closely with the critical vendors who fabricate the components. Depending on your qualifications, you may also lead the optical engineering group and the development of new optical switching products. As a member of a small company your contributions will have an immediate impact. The ideal candidate should have experience interacting with vendors to produce components to specification. They should also have an understanding of and experience testing various optical specifications including AR coatings specifications, scratch/dig, polish, surface figure, etc. Experience using Twyman-Green, Fizeau or other interferometers is a plus. Experience testing fiber optic specifications such as ORL, insertion loss or PMD is also a plus. Other skills such as lens design, tolerancing of optical systems, and any programming skills will be considered favorably. We will consider candidates with a minimum of a BS in optical engineering or a related field with 3+ years of experience. We will also consider candidates with an MS or PhD in optical engineering or a related field with 5+ years of experience for a senior level position.
