College of Optical Sciences News for Thursday, August 24, 2006

Congratulations

Lens Design Approach to Optical Relays, a thesis by Kevin O'Shea (OSC MS 2005), was selected to receive a top award in Optical Research Associates' 2006 Student Optical Design Competition.  The competition recognized excellence in optical design projects completed by students in either thesis work or an optical design class assignment.  The work must have been completed using either CODE-V or LightTools software.

Did UA Spell Your Name Right?

Please check your entry in the print version of UA's Faculty-Staff Directory and touch base with Stella Hostetler -- by Wednesday August 30 at the latest -- if you would like changes.

Coming Up:  August 25, 2006 -- OSC Community Speakers -- Noon -- Meinel 408

Two Optical Sciences research associates, Li Li and Robert Stegeman, will launch our 2006-2007 Community Speakers series.  Li Li will present Microstructured Optical Fibers - Why Do We Need Air Holes In The Fibers? and Robert Stegeman will present Direct Nonlinear Optics Measurements of Raman Gain Spectrum in Millimeter Thick Bulk Glass Samples.  Everyone at OSC is invited and encouraged to attend and those who would like to present may contact this year's host, PhD candidate Scott Gibb, via e-mail at sgibb@optics.arizona.edu  Also, the OSC Community Speakers Web site is excellent -- check it out at http://www.optics.arizona.edu/communityspeakers/

Colloquium

Our first Colloquium is scheduled for September 7, the first Thursday after the Labor Day holiday.

Prelims

The last day to sign up for Fall prelims in August 28.

Introducing
Please welcome Patricia Pettijohn, our new administrative associate.  Trish comes to Optical Sciences from UA's College of Nursing and will support both the Optical Detection Lab and the Development Office.  For the moment, Trish has office space in McKale 202 and can be reached via e-mail at trish@optics.arizona.edu or by telephone at 621-5690.  In mid-to-late September, Trish will begin dividing her time between McKale and a shared office in the West Wing and at that time she will also pick up a second telephone number.

UA Open Enrollment

The annual Benefit Options Open Enrollment will be held August 2 through September 8, 2006,  If you are satisfied with your current benefits, you do not need to take any action at this time.  All of your current benefits and options will continue through September 2007.  However, if you wish to make a change or elect new insurance coverage, you may enroll online.

Sports Friday -- Bring Your Frisbee and Join the Fun
Some of our grad students are thinking that it would be great to end the week with a sports event, so everyone's invited to participate in a game of ultimate Frisbee on the mall in front of Optical Sciences on Friday from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m.  Plans for next week are still TBD, but suggestions have included beach volleyball at the student rec center, soccer, basketball, inner tube water polo at the pool, tennis and more -- much, much more.
