College
of Optical Sciences News for Thursday, September 7, 2006
Congratulations Dr. Z
IEICE,
the Institute of Electronics, Information, and Communication Engineers,
has selected Dr. Richard Ziolkowski, professor of Electrical & Computer
Engineering and -- since late March -- professor of Optical Sciences, to
receive their Best Tutorial Paper Award for Antennas and Propagation
in the Presence of Metamaterials and Other Complex Media: Computational
Electromagnetic Advances and Challenges. It was published in
IEICE Transactions on Communications, vol. E88-B, no. 6, p. 2230, June
2005.
Today -- September 7, 2006 -- OSC Colloquium -- 3:30 p.m. -- Meinel 307
Professor Nasser Peyghambarian,
University of Arizona College of Optical Sciences, will launch the 2006-2007
Colloquium series with Photonic Materials and Devices.
Professor Stanley Pau is the host. Abstract: Our
recent advances in solid-state optoelectronic materials and
devices will be reviewed. In the area of glass optics,
fabrication of novel microstructured and multi-core fibers
and their use in realizing single mode lasers will be
summarized. In organic and plastic optics, photorefractive
polymers for 3D display applications and nonlinear polymers
for high speed modulators in RF photonic and remote antenna
applications will be discussed. Our progress in medical
optics including adaptive eyewear and imaging will also be
described.
Tomorrow: September 8, 2006 -- OSC Community Speakers -- Noon --
Meinel 307
This is a room change. (1)
Professor Stephen Jacobs, University of Arizona College of Optical
Sciences, will present They Got What They Wanted.
Description: A personal search for a profession and the race for
the laser. Includes a demonstration of a ruby laser. (2)
Professor Jason Jones, University of Arizona College of Optical
Sciences, will present Faster Clocks: Using short Pulses of Light to
Track Time.

Tomorrow: September
8, 2006 -- Sports Friday -- 5:00 p.m. -- UA Mall
This week it's soccer (aka
football) on the Mall in front of the OSC building. Bring water,
your soccer ball, and any other soccer gear that might come in handy.
If you don't own soccer gear you are probably in good company, so come anyway and plan to play
anyway.
If anyone owns or can borrow some cones or small soccer goals, please
contact Anna-Britt Mahler at
mahler@email.arizona.edu or 626-4117.
Coming Up: September
13, 2006 -- Real-World Optics -- 2:00 p.m. -- Meinel 305
OSC adjunct professor Robert
E. Parks will speak on Alignment of Optical Systems. The
seminar is open to everyone and no registration is required.
Coming Up --
September 14, 2006 -- OSC Colloquium -- 3:30 p.m. -- Meinel
307
Professor Grover Swartzlander, University of Arizona College
of Optical Sciences, will present Searching for
Extrasolar Planets with an Optical Vortex Coronagraph.
Professor Stanley Pau is the host. Abstract:
When inserted in a coronagraph, an optical vortex lens has
the potential to resolve a profound question: Are we alone
in the Universe? This talk will discuss my group's
experimental and theoretical progress. Our upcoming
experiment, being designed in collaboration with Steward
Observatory and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, will
also be described.

The College of Optical Sciences Student
Optics Chapter
Presents:
The Mount Graham/Large Binocular Telescope Tour
On
Saturday September 16 the Student Optics Chapter (the combined
student chapters of OSA and SPIE) will take a trip to the Mt.
Graham Observatory for a tour of the Large Binocular Telescope.
The group will leave from the College of Optical Sciences in the
morning (time will be announced) and will get to see the
telescope open for the evening if the weather permits. A group
will be staying on the mountain for the night, camping on
beautiful Mt. Graham. A second group will be returning to the
college Saturday evening. This will be a great opportunity to
get away for the weekend, see the new telescope, and spend some
time with friends in a beautiful location. Best of all, the
transportation is free. Undergraduates, graduate students,
faculty, and staff and families are all welcome.
-
For those who stay for the camping, breakfast will be
provided and prepared on Sunday morning by Dr. Jim Burge
-
Please plan to provide your own food for the trip with the
exception of breakfast
-
Camping equipment will be available at reasonable rates for
those who do not have their own
-
If you wish to drive yourself: from Tucson on Interstate
10, take exit #352 and drive north about 26 miles (past
State Route 266) to the intersection of State Route 366.
Turn left onto SR-366 and proceed one mile to the Base Camp
on your right.
If
you wish to attend, please contact Ben Richards at
brichards@optics.arizona.edu. Please include in the
email whether you will stay for the day/evening or overnight.
Please respond by Friday September 8. |
