Professor Roger Angel

Roger Angel Receives OSA's Fraunhofer Award

OSA has announced that Astronomy/OSC professor Roger Angel is the recipient of their 2007 Joseph Fraunhofer Award/Robert M. Burley Prize. He is being recognized for "innovation in optical systems development, including large astronomical telescope and mirror technology, methods for observing extrasolar planets, fiber-fed spectroscopy, adaptive optics, and a possible optical solution for global warming".  OSA established the Fraunhofer Award in 1982 to recognize significant accomplishments in the field of optical engineering and established the accompanying prize in 1992 to honor the memory of Robert M. Burley, who exemplified many of the highest attributes of the optical engineer and was the first recipient of the Fraunhofer Award.  Only one other OSC faculty member has received the Fraunhofer award:  Jim Wyant in 1992.

Company is Coming

In the next few days, we will welcome two groups of visitors to Optical Sciences:  On Friday, a large group from the Optical Interference Coatings conference will tour our building and then next week, we will host our annual optics summer camp.  Here's what to expect:

June 8: 2:00 p.m.  At the conclusion of the Optical Interference Coatings conference held in Tucson this week, a group of about 50 guests will visit us to learn about our college and tour several of our labs -- primarily on the first, second, and fifth floors.  The tours will be self-guided and the room numbers in our building can be confusing, so if you meet a guest in need of directions, please do what you can to help.  By the way, there is still time to add additional labs to the tour list, so if you're interested in hosting an open lab for our guests, please contact Will Rivera.

June 11 - 15:  afternoons.  Once again, our students and faculty members will host Optics -- Lighting the Way to the Future, a segment of the Arizona Youth University.   And once again, the camp is filled to capacity with 20 students.  Activities will be held primarily on the 8th floor of the West Wing, but a few workshops are scheduled to be held in the 4th floor teaching labs, so please be aware that groups of students will be going back and forth occasionally.

Baby News

OSC PhD candidates Hua Wei and Xiushan Zhu are the proud parents of a new daughter, Emma.  She was born on May 20 and weighed in at 7 pounds, 12 ounces.  Congratulations, Hua and Xiushan.  We wish you joy, wonder, and some sleep.

T-Shirts

This year's student-designed OSC t-shirts have arrived and are for sale in our Academic Programs office.  The black cotton shirts were designed by two of our Bachelor's degree students, Kyle Fuerschbach and Byron Cocilovo, and in the pictures below are being modeled by two of our PhD candidates, Corrie Vandervlugt and Tyler Neely.  The shirts cost $18 each and are available in unisex sizes small through xxxlarge while supplies last.  Out-of-towners, please contact Cynthia Martinez at cmartinez@optics.arizona.edu to see if it might be possible to have a shirt mailed to you.
