Spring 2006 Rolyn Optics Awards

 

Justin Paul, Sheng Yuan, and Rene Zehnder have been selected to receive Rolyn Optics' Outstanding Graduate Student Teaching Assistant Awards for work they did during the Spring 2007 semester.  The awards recognize and reward OSC graduate students who have done outstanding work as teaching assistants.  The awards, given to three students every Spring and three more students every Fall, consists of a letter of commendation, an award certificate and a cash prize.  Over the years, Rolyn Optics has rewarded 60 Optical Sciences students.  Congratulations Justin, Sheng, and Rene.

 


 

Elaine Ulrich is OSC's First Technology Transfer Fellow

 

OTT, UA;s Office of Technology Transfer, has selected Elaine Ulrich to be the first Technology Transfer Fellow in Optics.  This fellowship, new this year, is intended for advanced PhD students who have a broad technical perspective and an understanding of the commercial applications of innovations in optics. Elaine will participate by analyzing invention disclosures from professors and students in optics or closely related fields, preparing initial market analyses based on research they undertake, and drafting tech briefs to capture the essence of the innovation, its market applications, and advantages.  Congratulations Elaine.

Aurora Optical in Tucson, AZ is seeking a Mechanical Engineering senior/grad student for a paid internship.  The ideal candidate will have experience using CAD software (ProE or SolidWorks) to design optical mechanical systems, injection molds, and associated tooling.  The student can expect to gain experience in opto-mechanical system design, system and component tolerancing, generation of production drawings, and methods for fabricating plastic optics.  Additionally, Aurora Optical is vertically integrated allowing opportunities to experience mold making, diamond turning, precision inspection, and machine automation.  This is an excellent opportunity for a student to gain practical skills in a production environment. Senior Optical Design Engineer.  Lightfleet Corporation.  Lightfleet Corporation is an emerging early staged company located in a suburb of Portland, OR that has invented the world’s first free-space broadcast optical interconnect. Initiates team brainstorming efforts to find solutions to technical problems.  Stays up-to-date on current and new diagnostic tools and applies appropriate tools to laboratory work.  Identifies and creatively solves complex technical problems.  Builds final hardware configuration for the project.  Exercises responsibility and safety in the lab.  Data Analysis:  Collects, interprets and analyzes data in regard to project objectives and related work in the industry.  Identifies problems from experimental results and confers with project team members and manager about next steps.  Documentation:  Documents results thoroughly in lab notebook.  For deliverable hardware:  a. Optical Scientist.  Agency Listing.  Job Summary:  San Diego company has developed a unique microbead technology based on the use of holographic grating elements written into glass substrates (currently germanosilicate glass).  This technology, termed VeraCode, has been used as the basis of newly launch product platform (BeadXpress) enabling mid-low scale multiplexing of DNA & protein analysis.  Company seeks an optical scientist skilled in the writing and analysis of (Bragg) gratings in photosensitive materials (filament/fibers), to support the manufacturing of VeraCode beads and in guiding the company’s product migration in this area.  Particular experience with the fabrication of photosensitive gratings and the set-up and maintenance of UV laser fabrication equipment are desired.  Job duties include but are not limited to:  Responsible for guiding the VeraCode microbead product line evolution and for the sustaining support of the current VeraCode bead laser write workstation.  Candidate will work with engineers, scientists, and manufacturing personnel as the technical lead of the product family including troubleshooting issues, working with vendors, developing improvements, and participating in the research and development of future generations of the technology. Candidate will be expected to travel in the US as part of the initial training on the technology.  Education and Experience:  PhD/MS Physicist or Materials Engineer/Scientist with 10+ years experience, with extensive knowledge of Bragg grating formation and holographic fabrication processes preferably in doped germanosilicate glass (e.g., as in optical fibers).
