OPTI 696D Practical Optics: Engineering of Optical Systems
Could you imagine getting an advanced degree in optics without knowing how common optical systems work? Here’s your chance to take some systems apart and learn how optical systems engineering is put to practice.
In this class, you’ll have the opportunity to study a system thoroughly and present your findings. You’ll learn about other systems from your peers as well. For details, see the class website: www.optics.arizona.edu/OPTI696
Credits: One. When: Wednesday
afternoons, from 3:00 to 4:15. Where: Meinel 422.
OSC Library News
Students, if you need assistance in OSC's Fred A. Hopf Library, please see Jamie Grace. In addition to her regular duties in our Academic Programs office, Jamie will be assuming Librarian duties as well. The plan calls for Jamie to work in the Library every afternoon from 1:00 to 3:00. After that, until close of business at 5:00, she will divide her time between the Library and the Academic Programs office, right around the corner. This gives her two sets of email addresses and telephone numbers -- Library: librarian@optics.arizona.edu 621-8154 and Academics: jgrace@optics.arizona.edu 621-4111.

Postdoctoral Fellow in Adaptive Optics and OCT. Indiana University. Job summary: Position centers on developing advanced optical technologies in optical coherence tomography (OCT) and adaptive optics for high-resolution imaging of the human eye. Job description: Don Miller's laboratory at Indiana University is seeking a postdoctoral fellow to explore OCT and adaptive optics technologies for imaging non-invasively the human retina at the single cell level. His group has developed a new-high-resolution camera that yields unprecedented 3-D resolution inside the eye. The camera has been recently expanded for polarization-sensitive imaging. The successful candidate will further develop these technologies in parallel with their use to study the optical properties of the retina. Qualifications for the position includes a PhD and strong experimental background in optics, ideally with expertise in OCT, adaptive optics, polarization-sensitive imaging or a related area. Strong communication skills are highly attractive. Experience with optical system design and construction, digital image processing (Matlab), and Fourier optics are desirable. Knowledge of visual optics is not required, though beneficial. The project is supported by the NSF Center for Adaptive Optics at www.ucolick.org/~cfao and a multi-institutional NIH grant (collaborators include UC-Davis and Lawrence Livermore). Collaboration with participating institutions and other group members will be significant. Miller's lab (http://www.opt.indiana.edu/people/faculty/miller.htm) is part of the Visual optics Group at Indiana University, an active community of vision and optics scientists working in the areas of visual optics, retinal imaging, OCT, and adaptive optics (http://research.opt.indiana.edu). A major aim of the Group is to create advanced optical instrumentation for eye research. Indiana University is one of the oldest state universities west of the Alleghenies with many of its graduate programs ranked among the best in the country. Bloomington is a relaxed community located in a beautifully wooded and hilly area of the state where cultural opportunities abound, cost of living is low, schools are excellent, and commuting time is short. Indiana University is an equal opportunity, affirmative action employer. Review of applications will begin immediately and will be accepted until the position is filled. Applicants should send a CV, a statement of research interests, and contact information of three references. Donald T. Miller, School of Optometry, 800 East Atwater Avenue, Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana 47405. For email applications, please send to dtmiller@indiana.edu
