Award Recipients for UA's Student Showcase 2007
Student Showcase provides students with a very public opportunity to share their research with others. With more than 100 exhibits, the showcase represents the only student-run research exhibition of its magnitude in the United States and is an excellent reflection of the success of the University of Arizona's visionary research.
This year, two Optical Sciences students were selected to receive three awards for their excellent presentations:
BIO5 Innovator Award, graduate level: Anthony Tanbakuchi, College of Optical Sciences for The Multi-Spectral Confocal Imaging System for Optical Biopsy in Surgery.
Engineering, 1st place graduate level: Anthony Tanbakuchi, College of Optical Sciences for The Multi-Spectral Confocal Imaging System for Optical Biopsy in Surgery.
Physical Sciences, Mathematics, Computer Engineering, & Computer Science, 2nd place graduate level: Stefano Young, College of Optical Sciences for Image Quality in Cardiac SPECT – An International Collaboration.
Our Gift to Tucson's Community Food Bank
Once again, we would like to try to help others during the holiday season, so Stella Hostetler and Cindy Robertson have organized a drive to collect donations for the Community Food Bank here in Tucson. Look for the collection box on the fourth floor of the West Wing, in the hallway overlooking the lobby. The Community Food Bank's list of most-needed non-perishables includes canned meats, vegetables, soups, fruits, tomato products, and cereal, peanut butter, rice, and beans. Gifts of cash are also very, very welcome because for every dollar donated, food bank staffers can negotiate about ten dollars worth of perishables such as meats, dairy products, fresh produce, and bread.
Note: So far, this year's collection has been disappointing, but we will keep the collection box open until the 14th. Tucson families that are having a tough time will really appreciate anything you can contribute.
Spring 2008 Comprehensive Exam “Prelims”
February 12 and 13, 2008. Sign-up for the exam in the Academic Programs Office by January 30.
Scholarship Opportunity for Grads and Undergrads
Please be aware that the SMART Scholarship Deadline is fast approaching but that there is still time to submit an application. This program is intended for U.S. citizens to support the education and recruitment of undergraduate and graduate students in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields. This program is used to recruit and to retain civilian scientists and engineers to work at DoD agencies and laboratories. Recipients are awarded full tuition, educational fees, and a stipend that starts at $22,000 - $39,000. The application will close December 14, 2007.
