Narendra Ahuja, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, will present Versatile Cameras. Stanley Pau is the host.
Abstract: This two-part talk presents selected results of our research in computer vision over the last 15 years. In the first part, we focus on our work on high-performance cameras. These cameras use specialized combinations of imaging geometry, optical methods and vision algorithms to acquire images and videos that are versatile with respect to one or more of the following characteristics: field-of-view size, depth-of-field, depth estimation, and resolution. Prototypes and applications of these cameras that we have developed will also be reviewed.
In the second part, we review our recent results for some computer vision and image processing problems in object recognition, dynamic texture modeling and synthesis, and vision-based modeling of 3D objects.

Tim Grabowski, Senior Member of the Technical Staff at The Aerospace Corporation, Chantilly VA and an OSC first year PhD student, will present FFRDCs, 'Real-World' Academia? Abstract: This talk will focus on the aspects of working for a Federally Funded Research and Development Center whose primary role is to support our nation's military space programs. * How The Aerospace Corporation fulfills this role. * Who our main 'customers' are and their programs. * Key differences between FFRDCs and defense contractors/government agencies. * Work environment/benefits. The second part of this talk will focus on some of the unclassified programs that I have been involved in during the past six years while at The Aerospace Corporation. Two programs in particular that I will discuss deal with the collection and analysis of hyperspectral IR data. One is the Spatially Enhanced Broadband Array Spectrograph System (SEBASS), an airborne MWIR/LWIR 256 channel LHe cooled spectrometer and the other is a Block M100 LWIR 181 channel FTIR spectrometer, a ground based single pixel instrument integrated into a raster scanning mirror assembly.
Dr. John Koshel, University of Arizona, will discuss how the look and feel of illumination systems plays a large role in their effectiveness, especially to "entice" buyers. Lit-appearance modeling is the ability to accurately visualize the appearance of an illumination system prior to time-consuming and expensive fabrication. I will display three methods of lit-appearance modeling: spot diagrams, pupil sampling, and luminance. These methods are being developed in a number of software analysis codes, which are tools of choice for illumination engineers. I will show examples from four software tools, including lightpipes, reflectors, room scenes, driving scenes, and a piece of art "from the eyes of the OpSci community." This talk provides an introduction to the rapidly growing field of illumination engineering. In the Spring 2009 semester, I will be teaching a 2-credit, project-based course on Illumination Engineering for both Undergraduates and Graduates. The goal of the course is to teach you the basic principles of illumination optics, while also instructing you how to use the currently available design tools. Abstract: Ultra-cold atom gases trapped in an optical lattice are now poised to make strong contributions to resolving outstanding questions in condensed matter physics. I will talk about how we are using this system to simulate models relevant to dirty superconductors. I will report on two new results, including the observation of dissipation induced by quantum tunneling and thermal activation of phase slips, and the first experiments on an optical lattice that include fine-grained disorder.
Stefano Young Receives First Place Award in GPSC's Student Showcase
GPSC, UA's Graduate and Professional Student Council, has awarded Stefano Young a first place award in the Graduate Student Physical Sciences, Mathematics, Computer Engineering, and Computer Science Division for his Image Quality in Digital Breast Tomosynthesis.
Student Showcase is the academic portion of UA's Homecoming weekend. The showcase attracts the best student academic work at UA and is intensely competitive. Physical exhibits submitted by students include a 4' x 8' display board and many students incorporate technology or three-dimensional materials supporting their research.
Students receive prize money by demonstrating the ability to discuss the cultural implications of their work in combination with exceptional talent and research skills.
A panel of faculty, fellow students, and community members judge the exhibits. Judges consider overall display, clarity of presentation, and the exhibitors' ability to field questions concerning their project, in addition to the academic and/or scientific merit and the value of their research to the community.

Geometrical Optics -- A New OSC Short Course by John Greivenkamp

Course details: The course provides the background and principles necessary to understand how optical imaging systems function. Optical system imagery can readily be calculated using the Gaussian cardinal points or by paraxial ray tracing. These principles are extended to the layout and analysis of multi-component systems. This course includes topics such as imaging with thin lenses and systems of thin lenses, stops and pupils, afocal systems, illumination systems, mirrors and prisms, and radiative transfer. Numerous examples of optical systems are described. This course provides simple methods of arriving at, and understanding, the first-order layout of an optical system by a process which determines the required components and their locations. This process will produce an image of the right size and in the right location. A special emphasis is placed on the practical aspects of the design of optical systems.
This course will enable you to: 1. Specify the requirements of an optical system for your application including magnification, object-to-image distance, and focal length 2. Diagram ray paths and do simple ray tracing 3. Describe the performance limits imposed on optical systems by diffraction, the human eye, and through-put limits 4. Predict the imaging characteristics of multi-component systems 5. Determine the required element diameters 6. Apply the layout principles to a variety of optical instruments including telescopes, microscopes, magnifiers, field and relay lenses, zoom lenses, afocal systems, and illumination systems 7. Adapt a known configuration to suit your application 8. Understand the process of the design and layout of an optical system
Intended audience: This course is intended for engineers, scientists, managers, technicians and students who need to use or design optical systems and want to understand the principles of image formation by optical systems. No previous knowledge of optics is assumed in the material development, and only basic math is used (algebra, geometry and trigonometry). By the end of the course, these techniques will allow the design and analysis of relatively sophisticated optical systems.
The course is divided into eight sessions and runs for a whopping 9 hours and 43 minutes.
At $1000 for an individual-use copy or $5000 for a site license, Geometrical Optics is a bargain.

Computer Generated Holography (CGH) and Diffractive Optical Element (DOE) Workshop
March 17 - 19, 2009 Co-sponsored by SPIE
CGH design spans decades of applied and theoretical research. DOEs are CGHs used in optical systems. Fabrication of these devices has traditionally been time-consuming, using binary photomasks and semiconductor foundry resources. The purpose of this workshop is to provide participants with a hands-on learning opportunity for design and fabrication of these devices using the Maskless Lithography Tool (MLT). Through a series of lectures, computer training, and laboratory experiments, participants will be exposed to processes needed to design and build physical devices.
Learning objectives: Participants who successfully complete this three day course will be able to:
Intended audience: The course is geared towards scientists, engineers, managers, and researchers interested in exploring fundamentals of Computer Generated Holography, Diffractive Optical Elements and Maskless Grayscale Lithography who want to gain hands-on, working knowledge in this field. A strong undergraduate-level mathematical background and a basic knowledge of optics are helpful.
Program overview: Classes are divided into lecture and laboratory sessions each day, where each day covers a different topic. The laboratory involves hand-on training in fabrication and testing of CGHs. Software written in the Matlab© language is provided with a one-year license agreement as part of the course. Classes are held in the world-famous College of Optical Sciences on the beautiful University of Arizona campus in Tucson, Arizona. Class size is strictly limited to provide a quality learning environment.
