Today's Colloquium.  April 16.  3:45 p.m.  Meinel 307

Jennifer Barton, University of Arizona Biomedical Engineering, Electrical & Computer Engineering and Optical Sciences, will present Endoscopes for Optical Coherence Imaging and Fluorescence Spectroscopy: Design and Applications to Cancer Imaging.  Stanley Pau is the host.

Abstract:  Optical methods of investigating tissue have the advantages of high sensitivity, high resolution, relatively low cost, and ability to sense both structural and biochemical characteristics of tissue. The limited penetration depth of light can be partially offset by endoscopic delivery using small-diameter fiber optics. Optical techniques hold the promise of directing, minimizing, or perhaps even eliminating traditional destructive biopsy by providing diagnostic information in a harmless manner.  I will discuss two complementary optical modalities: optical coherence tomography (OCT) and fluorescence spectroscopy (FS), which provide micron-scale cross-sectional imaging and information about the concentration and distribution of fluorescent biomolecules, respectively. My group has developed instrumentation (particularly miniature endoscopes) and image analysis techniques for OCT and combined OCT/FS. While relevant to variety of medical conditions, we have applied these tools primarily to clinical and pre-clinical studies of skin, colon, and ovarian cancer. Intriguing images of early stage cancer have been obtained with OCT, while FS has provided information both on the metabolic activity of the tissue and possible confounders in OCT. I will end the seminar by discussing future possibilities for these optical techniques.

Next Week's Colloquium.  April 23.  3:30 p.m.  Meinel 307

Aephraim Steinberg, University of Toronto, is the scheduled speaker.

Mt. Lemmon Camping Trip this Weekend

Our OSA/SPIE Student Optics Chapter (SOCk) has scheduled an evening of camping at the Rose Canyon Lake Campground at beautiful Mt. Lemmon on Saturday, April 18. (Note from SOCk:  It's true, there is a lake on Mt. Lemmon ... with real live fish!)

SOCk has reserved a group campsite for tents and will provide dinner (burgers, hot dogs, veggie patties, s'mores etc). Campers are responsible for providing their own transportation and camping supplies. The cost of this event is $5.00 which covers the campsite and dinner.

If you plan to attend, you should already have sent an RSVP to Robin Palit by Thursday morning.  Hope to see you there.
