Special Presentation Introducing Optical Engineer Candidate Andrew Rakich

May 20 at 10:00 a.m. in Meinel 821

Dr. Andrew Rakich will present A Progression in Optics.

Abstract:  After some introductory biographical information this talk will proceed to outline the speakers' particular interests and experience in the area of optical design, optical alignment and aberration theory. Past work experience will be discussed, and here some mention will be made of not just the speakers' technical work in the field of optical design, but also work in technical marketing, business development and project management areas. Current areas of research interest will be discussed, such as closed form algebraic approaches to certain classes of optical design, and a generalization of Burch's plate diagram theory to deal with perturbed optical systems, transforming Shack's "sigma" vector in the image plane to an angular vector at infinity.

Bio:  In 1994-96 completed his BSc (hons) Physics from Victoria University of Wellington, received his MSc in Physics from the University of Canterbury in 2001 and graduated with a PhD in Physics from the University of Canterbury in 2007.  He is currently employed with the University of Arizona as an Optical Scientist with the Large Binocular Telescope Observatory Engineering Group.
