New Course and Lab Announcement for Fall 2009

Opti 415/515: Optical Specifications, Fabrication and Testing -- the class.

On-campus or on-line.  3 credits. Professors Jim Burge, Bob Parks, and Bill Kuhn.  Email:  Jim Burge at jburge@optics.arizona.edu

Opti 415L/515L: Optical Specifications, Fabrication and Testing -- the laboratory.

On-campus with a condensed one-week lab arrangement for distance students.  1 credit. Professors Jim Burge, Bob Parks, and Bill Kuhn.  Email:  Bob Parks at rparks@optics.arizona.edu

The course:  This class will illustrate the practice of specifying and fabricating optical elements with a major part being optical testing as practiced in industry to show that specifications have been met. After an introduction to first-order optical principles, we will start with an optical instrument design and show how each of the elements are specified on mechanical drawings, and how the optic would be fabricated with attention to which tolerances are easy to achieve and which are difficult.  The testing part of the course will be illustrated with shop practice tests to demonstrate compliance with specifications. While the principles of the test instruments will be discussed, the emphasis will be on the use of the instruments and how to interpret the test results relative to the specifications.  The course will also cover the ISO optical drawing format and ISO standards for optical materials, coatings, and optical tests. Some of the homework will involve preparing optical element drawings and writing simple test procedures to verify

specifications.

The laboratory:  A 15-week optical testing laboratory will complement the class and be available for local students. A condensed, one-week version of the lab will be available to distance students at an extra cost and will be held during a break in regularly scheduled classes.

Syllabi:  Opti 415/515 class and Opti 415L/515L lab
