2010 Engineering Design Day at UA

Our Seniors Showcase their Senior Design Projects

Our seniors take Engineering 498A-B, a year long course in which they work in cross-disciplinary teams to solve industry-sponsored real-world design problems using the design process.  The objectives of the course are to guide the students in:

  • applying a systematic design methodology to a realistic, open-ended, multidisciplinary design problem from start to finish

  • applying approaches for developing innovative solutions

  • applying math, science, and engineering fundamentals in a design process

  • working effectively on teams with engineers from multiple disciplines

  • using project management tools effectively, and

  • communicating to a broad audience via both written and oral reports

At the end of the academic year, the teams show their work at UA's Engineering Design Day.  The projects are judged and prizes are awarded.

The interdisciplinary Engineering Design Day is sponsored by BAE Systems, Lockheed/Martin, and UA's College of Engineering.  The projects are sponsored and funded by faculty and industry partners, including several OSC Industrial Affiliate companies:  Lockheed Martin, BAE Systems, Northrop-Grumman, Raytheon,  and Edmund Optics.   The companies also sponsor prizes and provide many of the professional engineers who serve as judges.
