Research Experience for Undergrads Three REU programs are seeking talented students for the summer: The Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Center for Materials Science and Engineering, together with its Materials Processing Center, is sponsoring a nine-week summer scholars course, with applications due Feb. 10. In the Vanderbilt Institute for Nanoscale Science and Engineering's research experience, students can choose from among 20 different projects in nanoscience. Applications must be completed by Feb. 15. Projects at the Summer Undergraduate Fellowship in Sensor Technologies at the University of Pennsylvania may involve nanotechnology and materials for sensors, wireless sensor networks and optical and vision sensors. Applications are due Feb. 27.
Brand-New Postdoc Opportunities The National Science Foundation recently initiated the Small Business Postdoctoral Research Diversity Fellowships, which aim to bring recent doctoral recipients into the small, innovative companies that have historically fueled the nation's economic engine. Love Math? Join a G-TEAM! The University of Arizona Institute for Mathematics and Education's Graduate Students and Teachers Engaging in Mathematical Sciences program pairs grad student fellows with K-12 classrooms. Fellows learn how to communicate complex ideas to diverse audiences; students learn where the depths of mathematics can take them. Interested? Applications are due by Jan. 31.
Arizona Center for Innovation Dedication The Office of University Research Parks invites interested members of the University community to gather at 11:45 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 18, at the UA Tech Park for a special dedication and ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Arizona Center for Innovation. RSVP required by Jan. 13.
Tucson Best Fest Postponed Tucson's leg of the Arizona Best Fest, originally scheduled for Jan. 20–22, has been postponed until after Valentine's Day. City Hall Kiosk Rebuilt After a recent spate of vandalism and 17 years of water damage, the kiosk installed by Professor Emeritus Stephen F. Jacobs outside Tucson City Hall has been replaced with a new and improved version. Located in El Presidio Park, the double-sided kiosk explains the 50-foot wavy diffraction grating that rests atop City Hall and throws its shifting colors around the downtown cityscape. Many thanks to the Arizona Optics Industry Association and the City of Tucson Parks and Recreation Department for their assistance on the project.
Ph.D. Defense. 10 a.m., Franken Conference Room (Meinel 821). Julia Sakamoto will present "Inverse Optical Design and Its Applications."
