Optical Sciences is recognized internationally for its innovative and unusually comprehensive research programs.   Research encompasses a broad set of technologies and techniques for exploiting the properties and applications of light and touches virtually every field of science and all modern industries.

Funding and Sponsorship

Optical Sciences is unique in that nearly all research is sponsored: funded by contracts from industry or governmental agencies.  Faculty members partner with scientists, researchers, engineers and administrators from industry, government and academia to conduct the leading-edge research that powers the future of the world’s high-technology industries.  Since 2000, when Arizona voters approved a sales tax increase to help expand Arizona's economic base, Optical Sciences research and technology development in Photonics and Imaging has been partially supported by TRIF, the Technology & Research Initiative Funding.

Facilities and Resources

The extensive research facilities at Optical Sciences provide the resources for both theoretical and applied research programs in all areas related to optics and the optical sciences.  Optical Sciences continually refines and upgrades research facilities.  A new addition, the 47,000 square-foot West Wing, was completed in 2006 enabling us to expand our research capabilities and programs exponentially.

The Academic Complement

At Optical Sciences, education and research are inseparable.  Under the guidance of professors, scientists and administrators, students acquire scientific expertise and receive valuable training in administering internationally competitive programs by participating in cutting-edge experiments leading to the development of new technologies.  Graduates of Optical Sciences have received recognition at the national and international levels for their pioneering discoveries and intellectual leadership.
