International Conference on Advances in Optical Materials

October 12-15, 2005

Doubletree Hotel

Tucson, AZ

The First Conference on Advances in Optical Materials (AIOM) was organized and held with the support of TRIF faculty and funds. The conference was designed to attract researchers studying materials with special emphasis on their optical properties. The topics selected focused on optics and photonics through materials issues. The program committee recognized that while there are numerous conferences and meetings that deal with optical science and technology, few emphasize the optical characteristics and processes associated with different classes of materials.  The international organizing committee included Drs. Aggarwal (NRL), Hosono (Japan), Krol (UC Davis), Lucas (France), Michika (Raytheon), Perkins (Breault), and Simmons, Armstrong, Peyghambarian, Potter, Powell, Strittmatter (UA). Professor Joseph Simmons was the Conference Chair.  237 abstracts were received from which the organizing committee selected 73 for oral presentation and 140 for poster presentations. One plenary talk was given by Professor Bloembergen, a Nobel Laureate along with 24 invited talks. 157 participants attended divided by country of origin as follows: US 36%, Europe 40% and the Far East 22%. The Conference was extremely successful with plans to hold the next conference in the fall of 2008.

Proceedings from the conference have been published as a special issue of the Journal of Non-Crystalline Solids, referenced as Volume 352, Issues 23-25, July 15, 2006.
