Advanced Development Scientist | Block Engineering

Block Engineering, located in Marlborough, MA, is a developer of advanced mid-infrared spectroscopy products that are based on Quantum Cascade Lasers (QCLs) and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) Spectrometers. Block is currently seeking a full-time Scientist who can support both R&D programs and the development of commercial products.

Specific responsibilities will include:

• Design and characterize external-cavity QCLs
• Develop and test a Hyperspectral Imaging System to be used for trace chemical detection
• Analyze spectral data and support the development of detection algorithms
• Assess the viability of QCL-based spectroscopy to address various commercial applications
• Transition the results of R&D activities to Engineering and Manufacturing 
• Support field testing and product demonstrations

Required Skills and Background:

• Ph.D. or M.S. in Physics, Optics, Electrical Engineering, or related field (recent graduates or post-docs are welcome)
• Hands-on experience using lasers, optics, and electronics 
• Proficiency with MATLAB (essential)
• Team player with the ability to thrive in a fast-paced entrepreneurial environment
• Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
• Willingness to travel
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills

The following skills would be helpful as well:

• Background in spectroscopy (especially mid-infrared spectroscopy), chemistry, trace chemical detection, detection algorithms, gas sensing
• Working knowledge of optical design software such as Zemax
• Experience with the automated control of instruments using software such as C, C++, Python, or Labview
