Job Description: 

Global Imaging Technologies (GIT), a Business Area within General Dynamics Mission Systems, with multiple operating divisions located throughout the US, manufactures and sells a broad range of high performance electro-mechanical and electro-optical systems, sub-systems and components to the aerospace, defense, homeland security (protecting our soldier and guarding our borders), broadcast and film, and international markets.

If so, we are actively recruiting for an experienced and motivated Advanced Optical Engineer to act as a key contributor supporting optical design and analysis on complex programs that include both land based and airborne imaging systems ranging from UV to LWIR regions of the spectrum.

Highlights of Responsibilities: 

  • Execute the development of optical technologies and architectural concepts to support the company’s current and new business opportunities. 
  • Define optical requirements and specifications for imaging systems, assemblies, component drawings, coatings, etc.
  • Define optical budgets including lab level optics (manufacturing, alignment, design) and operational environment (dynamic loads, thermal loads, atmospheric)
  • Provide optical designs of advanced zoom lenses, telescopes, illuminators, laser range finders, and unique optical test-sets

Basic Qualifications: 

The successful Optical Engineer must have: 

  • A bachelor's degree in Optical Engineering or a related field and a minimum of 5-8 years of related experience or a master's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field and 3-5 years related experience
  • Minimum of 7 year experience in complex optical designs through hardware verification
  • Proficient with lens design (Zemax) and stray light analysis
  • Optical sensitivities including wave front error, MTF, line of sight, jitter, and transmission throughput
  • Experience with tolerances for manufacturing and optical alignments
  • Optical modeling, analysis and metrology support during Assembly, Integration, and Test
  • Other unique modeling, such as spectral tuning/splitting, polarization, image simulation, etc.

Qualifications (Preferred): 

The ideal Optical Engineer has: 

  • A master’s degree in Optical Engineering or Physics
  • Exposure to Systems Engineering standards, processes and disciplines
  • Working knowledge of MATLAB and FRED or equivalent stray light analysis
  • Experience with trouble shooting in prototype building and/or production
  • Experience creating specification reviews, generating technical proposals and selecting subsystems and components to meet requirements
  • Experience directing/coordinating the building of prototype products and/or systems
