Responsibilities

The Visible and Infrared Sensor Systems Department supports the design and deployment of electro-optical sensor payloads for civil, commercial, and national space systems. Our activities include: concept definition and mission-driven design-synthesis of electro-optical space sensors; detailed characterization and performance analysis of visible and infrared electro-optical detector arrays; design, assembly, integration, and test of ground and airborne prototype sensors; high-fidelity modeling and simulation of the performance of both individual electro-optical sensors and configurations of space and ground sensors. This posting is targeted for an electro-optical sensor analyst.

***This role can be supported from the Aerospace El Segundo, CA or Colorado Springs, CO location***

Key Functions

  • Provide oversight, guidance, and technical advice on customer electro-optical projects in the areas of Space Situational Awareness.
  • Model earth and deep-space backgrounds and targets for non-imaging point source detection systems; analyze the performance of electro-optical sensor constellations.
  • Provide performance analysis of electro-optical sensor concepts for developing technical performance requirements and assessing proposed designs.
  • Perform data analysis of simulated and real electro-optical sensor data.
  • Work with other members of the technical staff to solve multi-disciplinary problems.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university in astronomy, physics, optics, or a closely related field.
  • Strong analytic problem-solving skills relating to the performance of visible and infrared sensors including: signal chain analysis, radiometry, and visible and infrared backgrounds.
  • Experience using common engineering applications environments such as Matlab or IDL to analyze data and implement numerical solutions to problems in remote sensing.
  • Must have or be able to obtain a Secret government clearance with SCI access (US citizenship required).

Preferred

  • An advanced degree from an accredited university.
  • Strong computer programming skills in a compiled computer language such as C, C++, Fortran, or similar.

Required for consideration as a Senior Member of Technical Staff

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience post Bachelor's degree from an accredited university in astronomy, physics, optics, or a closely related field.
  • Strong analytic problem-solving skills relating to the performance of visible and infrared sensors including: signal chain analysis, radiometry, and visible and infrared backgrounds.
  • Experience using common engineering applications environments such as Matlab or IDL to analyze data and implement numerical solutions to problems in remote sensing.
  • Experience analyzing space surveillance data from more than one type of electro-optical sensor.
  • Must have or be able to obtain a Secret government clearance with SCI access (US citizenship required).

Preferred for consideration as a Senior Member of Technical Staff

  • Demonstrated experience in constellation-level sensor performance analysis.
  • Demonstrated experience in detection theory, estimation theory, radiative transfer, optical design, stray light analysis, and/or orbital dynamics.
