Responsibilities

The Visible and Infrared Sensor Systems Department supports the design and deployment of electro-optical sensor payloads for civil, commercial, and national space systems. Our activities include: concept definition and mission-driven design-synthesis of electro-optical space sensors; detailed characterization and performance analysis of visible and infrared electro-optical detector arrays; design, assembly, integration, and test of ground and airborne prototype sensors; high-fidelity modeling and simulation of the performance of both individual electro-optical sensors and configurations of space and ground sensors. This posting is targeted for an experienced analyst.

***This role can be filled as an Aerospace Engineering Specialist or Sr. Engineering Specialist***

Key Functions

  • Provide oversight, guidance, and technical advice on customer electro-optical projects in the areas of space situational awareness and earth remote sensing.
  • Identify and resolve a variety of optical/electro-optical issues using knowledge of radiometry, optical engineering, sensor design, performance analysis and optimization, oversight of integration and test, calibration, and on-orbit performance assessment.
  • Work with other members of the technical staff to solve multi-disciplinary problems.
  • Interface frequently with program office and government personnel.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university in physics, astronomy, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 8 years of experience post-Bachelor’s degree, either in the workforce and/or in pursuit of an advanced degree in a field closely related to physics or astronomy.
  • Strong analytic problem-solving skills related to image processing, including infrared or optical data, ground or space-based images, adaptive optics, spectroscopy, and/or interferometry.
  • Experience using common engineering applications environments such as Matlab or IDL to analyze data and implement numerical solutions to problems in remote sensing.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must be able to work both independently and have leadership ability in small teams in order to complete technical assignments.
  • Ability to travel to off-site meetings and air travel to Aerospace or customer office locations is required.
  • Must have or be able to obtain an SCI security clearance.

Required for consideration as a Senior Engineering Specialist (In addition)

  • Minimum of 12 years of experience post-Bachelor’s degree, either in the workforce or in pursuit of an advanced degree in a field closely related to physics or astronomy.
  • Must have a demonstrated capacity to provide leadership in a team environment, including mentoring junior members of the technical staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to generate new work through internal or external sources.

Preferred

  • An advanced degree in physics, astronomy, or a closely related field.
  • Strong computer programming skills in a compiled computer language such as C, C++, Fortran, or similar.
  • Experience analyzing data from one or more sensors.
