Support VIAVI thin film manufacturing, assembly, fabrication, and test processes. Provide optical diagnostics when needed for problem resolution. Perform research as necessary to develop cutting edge optical measurement techniques. Act as a technical expert in support of optical measurement process development, tool design, and advanced techniques. Understand customer specifications and propose methodologies to confirm product conformance. Participate in thin film coating design reviews and manufacturing readiness reviews. Act as a technical expert in the design, function, and application of various spectrophotometers. Contribute to the VIAVI Teamwork and Safety culture. This position is located in Santa Rosa, California. VIAVI’s Santa Rosa facility manufactures products for applications in anti-counterfeiting, consumer electronics, government, healthcare and automotive markets, with manufacturing facilities in Santa Rosa CA, Beijing, Suzhou, and Rochester NY.
 
Key Roles and Responsibilities:
  • Contribute to the care, use, and maintenance of spectrophotometers
  • Contribute to VIAVI’s advanced metrology requirements
  • Develop measurement techniques that are applicable to new and innovative products
  • Experience with ray-tracing modeling software (Zemax, etc.)
  • Programming experience in LabView, Matlab, etc.
  • Understand machine vision applications, lighting, camera types
  • Ability to envision new tooling designs for products under development
  • Familiarity with fiber based optical systems (launch cones, collimators, ball lens coupling)
  • Understand interactions between the metrology equipment and the thin films
  • Familiarity with grating based monochromators
  • Provide input to optical coating manufacturing processes
  • Optical density measurements in the OD6 range
  • Effects of F number on thin film coating metrology
  • Participate in the design of optical systems to fit within specified physical limits on various substrates (glasses, germanium, silicon, etc.)
Success Indicators:
  • Understanding of thin film coating techniques (CVD, PVD, and sputtering)
  • Familiarity with various spectrophotometers, Frontier Optica FT-IR, Agilent Cary 60, Agilent Cary 500/6000/7000
  • Basic tooling design fundamentals related to custom mounting of small parts for measurement
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills and the ability to interface with all levels of staff and leadership.
  • Analytical thinker; detail oriented; problem solver.
  • Self-starter with the ability to both work independently and with cross-functional teams, and to work effectively in multi-disciplinary environment.
  • Capable of working on special projects in addition to normal day to day responsibilities and work in a fast paced environment.
Required Qualifications
  • Minimum B.S. in Optical Engineering, MS preferred
