Job Description: 


Assists with the optical design of next-generation optical subsystems for spectrally narrowed Excimer laser systems.  Performs a variety of engineering tasks including designing, developing, testing, analyzing, troubleshooting and implementing optical subassemblies and modules.  Creates and evaluates optical designs to meet requirements of specified applications.  Design activities include stress and thermal analysis of mounted optics, and optical tolerancing.  Provides technical skills supporting research and product development.


  • Assists higher level optical engineers with the engineering responsibility for module or subsystem design from concept design through manufacturing transfer and ramp.
  • Assists higher level optical engineers with the engineering responsibility for optical component and subassembly test development, data acquisition, analysis, and reporting.
  • Validates concepts through breadboard builds and analysis.
  • Assists with detailed optical design, optical component layout, and ray tracing for new or improved optical subsystems.
  • Works with Mechanical Engineers and CAD Designers for prototype and pilot detailed design.
  • Assists with driving full documentation of design including, BOM, drawings, and procedures.
  • Assists with the management of development activities using the Cymer Product Development Process including concept reviews, design reviews, proto builds, pilot builds, verification testing, etc., with records and completion of all open action items.
  • Assists in the development of test plans, create test procedures, performs tests and data reduction and evaluates test data.  
  • Assists in assembling and testing opto-mechanical and electro-optic prototypes.
  • Interfaces with manufacturing engineering to develop and implement designs that improve manufacturability.
  • Interfaces with purchasing to obtain prototype components for use in assemblies.
  • Interfaces with manufacturing personnel to coordinate the build of modified or new prototype assemblies.
  • Works with CAD personnel to create and/or modify component and assembly drawings.
  • Uses Cymer’s change management process to implement demonstrated product improvements.

  • Prefer a candidate that is currently pursuing a Master’s Degree or PhD in Engineering, Chemistry or Physics
  • Optical or Opto-mechanical Design experience a plus.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to translate, statistically analyze data, and effectively report problems through written and/or graphical formats.
  • Excellent customer service skills, with an advanced understanding of customer relationship building.
  • Ability to use MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and electronic e-mail systems.
  • Ability to work either independently or as part of a development team.
  • Self-motivation and ability to work in a fast-moving high-tech environment. 


  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee routinely is required to sit; walk; talk; hear; use hands to keyboard, finger, handle, and feel; stoop, kneel, crouch, twist, reach, and stretch.
  • The employee is occasionally required to move around the campus. 
  • The employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
  • May require travel dependent on business needs.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Can work under deadlines.
  • The environment generally is moderate in temperature and noise level.

  • Able to work at CAD station for several hours at a time. 
  • Able to put together mechanical assemblies including lifting 25 lbs. from floor to shoulder height.
  • Requires working with a firing laser (which is noisy) on a frequent basis.
  • Requires working in a manufacturing clean room environment occasionally.
  • Requires working with Excimer lasers in noisy environments (requiring ear protection) and potential radiation hazards (requiring eye and skin protection).
