The Electrical Subsystems Directorate (ESD), Electro-Optical Products and Technologies Department is currently searching for an optical design engineer with optical design and analysis skills, interest and/or experience in infrared systems, optical tolerancing, optical fabrication, and testing. Chosen team member will work with multi-discipline teams supporting military programs through the application of optical design tools in the development and production phases of optical sensors. Assignments may include optical design, optical analysis such as stray light analysis, optical tolerancing, prototype development with optical component suppliers, optical testing, troubleshooting EO systems, and providing solutions to a variety of EO problems of moderate scope and complexity. Candidate will work under limited supervision while exercising responsibility in meeting the technical, financial and schedule objectives of projects.
Position will be either Systems Engineer I or Systems Engineer II depending on level of education.

Required Skills:

Ideal candidate will have experience or course work exposure to optical design and analysis, and will possess the following knowledge/abilities:

  • U.S. Citizenship required
  • Master’s degree in Optics, Physics, or Systems Engineering or related discipline
  • Classes in optical engineering and/or physics
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Strong desire to learn and contribute in a team based environment
  • Candidate is required to attain secret level clearance.

Desired Skills:

  • Knowledge and experience in optical design and analysis, infrared systems, optical tolerancing, fabrication, and testing
  • Proficient in CODE V and/or Zemax, and Excel and Matlab
  • Class projects, professional internships, or academic research demonstrating the ability to apply technical course work or computer software skills
  • Strong interpersonal, leadership, and communication skills
  • Ability to travel to government and other facilities in support of program activities
  • Active DoD issued security clearance

Desired Education (including Major):
Masters of Science in Optics, Physics, or Systems Engineering or related discipline. ABET is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard. Cumulative GPA of 3.00 is desired.
This position requires the eligibility to obtain a security clearance. Except in rare circumstances, only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance. The Defense Industrial Security Clearance Office (DISCO), an agency of the Department of Defense, handles and adjudicates the security clearance process. Security clearance factors include, but are not limited to, allegiance to the US, foreign influence, foreign preference, criminal conduct, security violations and drug involvement.
