SUMMARY: 

The primary duty of this position is to explore and enhance performance limits of single frequency fiber lasers, pulsed fiber lasers, low noise fiber amplifiers, and/or fiber-based supercontinuum sources. The research and development is closely tied to NP Photonics’ product line and is expected to yield improvements and expansions in performance, reliability, and value to NP Photonics’ product portfolio. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Conduct research/development on NP Photonics’ product platforms based on hands-on experiments. 
  • Determine and develop innovative approaches to overcome performance limits
  • Develop full technical plans for product development
  • Design and build engineering prototypes for subsequent customer delivery and/or product development 
  • Document and report on R&D activities
  • Work with other functions of the company to communicate needs (budget, manpower, instrumentation) and results (technical reviews, white papers, instructions and more). 
  • Provide guidance to technicians on the team and direct their work as needed. 
  • Other duties may be assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: 

The candidate will have to work within a team of people spanning many different disciplines. Direct supervision of others may be required, depending on need. Excellent communication skills across different skill and education levels are expected. Candidate must be comfortable with a high-pressure environment, and able to work with minimal supervision and be a quick self-starter.

JOB REQUIREMENTS: 

  • PhD or equivalent experience in relevant subject (Physics, EE, Engineering, …) 
  • 5 yrs of related experience 
  • Currently eligible to work in the US 
  • Expert in fiber lasers and fiber amplifiers  
  • Expert in laser design and development including thermal management 
  • Self-starter and hands-on lab skills
  • Good understanding of product development process and design for manufacturability 
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills 
  • Excellent documentation practices 
  • Fluent in written and spoken English
  • Knowledge of LabView programming is a plus
