Our team is building a disruptive device - BOSS®, a biomechanics imaging device for the human eye that brings unprecedented capabilities to visualize stiffness of various tissues in high-resolution 3D maps. This device is unlike any on the market, and can truly transform the way refractive and cataract surgery are performed by giving clinicians and surgeons full control and the highest level of decision-making confidence. We predict this to become a standard of care and rapidly change how patients are screened, selected, and treated.

Position Description: 

Summary: This is a core leadership role in a fast-paced medical device startup, responsible for coordinating all R&D and clinical efforts throughout all phases of the development of BOSS®. As the core team leader, the ideal candidate will set and meet development milestones, and closely interface with founders, the executive team, our advisory board, key physicians around the world, and external development partners to identify engineering solutions to ensure appropriate and timely product definition, development and realization leading to commercialization. The candidate should be an out of the box thinker with a creative mind and an energetic attitude who can effectively implement problem solving skills and techniques to identify potential issues, assess their impact, and develop and implement mitigation and resolution plans and activities.

Essential job functions: 

  • Leading R&D efforts of company to develop a range of proprietary technology-based medical device products from productization through industrialization to commercialization. 
  • Building and implementing a project management team to effectively manage collaboration partners.
  • Collaborating with scientific and medical professionals to run pre-clinical and clinical testing of prototypes.
  • Managing multi-disciplinary and multi-site 3rd party development teams to develop several products in parallel.
  • Generate product ideas/concepts, intellectual property, and technical solutions to address clinical needs. 
  • Manage intellectual property portfolio. 
  • Manage budgets and effectively communicate projects status to executive team. 
  • Host audits from regulatory agencies and third parties and conduct audits at third parties.


A strong candidate requires: 

  • Profound knowledge of Optical, Mechanical or Biomedical Engineering. 
  • Proven experience in managing diagnostic or surgical device development as a project manager or R&D team leader in a fast paced and challenging environment.
  • Prior experience in the eyecare industry, preferably refractive or cataract surgery. 
  • Demonstrate creative design ability with an inquiring mind, intense curiosity, and strong desire to innovate in the field of eyecare. 
  • Demonstrate ability to prioritize, organize and manage multiple projects. 
  • Proven experience in coordinating global third party engineering teams, and across sites to effectively drive product development. 
  • Proven knowledge of medical device standards and requirements in FDA and CE-Mark regulated industries.
  • Willingness to travel 15%-20% domestically and occasionally international.
