Job Description: 

Synopsys Optical Solutions Group (OSG) is looking for an optical software developer to contribute to our optical software products in our Pasadena office.  The software is for a state-of-the-art optical CAD/CAE program for the layout, design, and analysis of illumination or imaging systems used by customers worldwide.
The candidate’s key responsibilities include:

  • Building solutions in C++ for our optical design software tools used by major consumer electronics companies
  • Able to research and develop complex optical algorithms based on requirements from customers and Product Marketing
  • Employs state-of-the-art development tools and practices to ensure high-quality and high-performance solutions are delivered to the market efficiently
  • Utilizing solid software engineering practices such as code refactoring, code reviews, unit testing, and regression test case creation and monitoring
  • Work with developers, testers, and customer representatives in an agile environment to create innovative illumination optical software solutions to tackle cutting edge problems
  • Viewed as credible and respected industry technology expert in advanced key technology areas critical to Synopsys/OSG


  • Master’s or PhD (preferred) in Optics, Physics, Engineering or related field
  • Demonstrated expertise and hands-on experience developing mathematical and computational modeling for solving challenging engineering problems in software
  • Experience and knowledge of object-oriented programming (C++ preferred) and software design best practice with an aptitude and passion of developing technical application software
  • Demonstrated ability to work on multiple concurrent projects and ability to work well in a team as well as independently.
  • Excellent written and verbal skills as well as the presentation kills with the ability to communicate highly technical information to peers
  • Knowledge of Illumination Optics or Optical design software for this industry

Knowledge and expertise in any of the following areas is a plus:

  • Experience with commercial Illumination or optical design software
  • Thorough understanding of statistical methods or random number theory
  • Experience with developing commercial engineering software
  • Knowledge or experience of Software processes such as Agile or Lean Software Development
  • Experience with Microsoft COM Programming
