We have an exciting opportunity available for a Mechanical Engineer Intern to join our Mechanical Technologies Group located in Rancho Bernardo, CA. This position is available for undergraduate or graduate students to participate in supervised practical training in mechanical engineering. Assists in the completion of routine, non-routine and advanced tasks; assists in the analysis, investigation and solution of various opto-mechanical engineering problems; and assists in developing electronic and hard copy documentation as required.


  • Participates in the day to day activities of assigned functional area assisting in the completion of non-routine and advanced tasks.
  • Assists in applying knowledge to analyze, investigate and resolve engineering problems.
  • Responsible for performing mechanical designs including: structural analysis, thermal analysis, 3D CAD and engineering drawings.
  • Addresses complex and difficult technical issues requiring highly creative approaches, drawing on advanced engineering concepts.
  • Assists in developing electronic and hard copy reports, records, diagrams and charts.
  • Expected to work in a safe manner in accordance with established operating procedures and practices.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.

Job Qualifications

  • Typically requires enrollment as an undergraduate or graduate student at a recognized college or university.
  • Must commit to at least a ten week summer internship.
  • Work experience in the engineering and/or opto-mechanical field a plus.
  • Should have a basic understanding of engineering concepts, including vibrations, stress analysis, fluids and heat transfer. Experience with CAD, FEM and CFD is desired. Being able to verify analysis predictions by hand is required.
  • Must possess: (1) the ability to understand new concepts and apply them accurately; (2) the ability to follow general and detailed instructions as well as organizational policies and procedures; (3) good communication and interpersonal skills to enable effective interface with internal professionals; (4) the ability to work independently or in a team environment; and (5) basic computer skills.
