Based in our Tucson site, this position leads the local R&D team to investigate, design, develop, and maintain optical-based products, technologies and systems in the measurement of real‑time detection of microbial matter.  The products are focused on laser-based fluorescence and light scattering.

Theposition requires not only leadership, but direct design contribution as a hands-on contributor. The ideal candidate will be capable to work as project leader/engineer as part of a cross-functional product development team to create new products, features, services, and processes. This role works manages the Tucson R&D team and works closely with the Billerica R&D team, and reports directly to the head of R&D located in Billerica, MA. The R&D team is a small (7 person), very focused, and versatile multi-disciplinary group, and it is supported by other engineering resources within the company.  The R&D team also assures that all proper documentation is generated and in place for Production to build and test the product.

Responsibilities: (in order of importance)

  1. As the senior manager at our Tucson facility, this position would act as an indirect supervisor to the few non-R&D staff located on site, as well as the direct supervisor to the R&D team members.
  2. Manages the R&D team to design and develop new optical/opto-mechanical analytical systems to meet business objectives and product specifications. 
  3. Develops optical microbial detection technologies and measuring systems for new analytical instrument products and services.The position requires engineering experience in areas of optical measurement and instrumentation (UV-VIS or near- and mid-IR range) from concept to design to production transfer.  Areas of competence include opto-mechanical technologies, with electrical hardware and/or software signal analysis and controls.
  4. Interfaces with Manufacturing Engineering to provide easy-to-assemble and easy-to-test products.  Evaluates and implements procedures and calibration methods to test and adjust optical assemblies and instruments in production.
  5. Provides support for all stages of the product development lifecycle: R&D, Manufacturing Engineering, Production, and Field Service.
  6. Investigates problems to products/processes, and finds and implements solutions.
  7. Conducts basic-to-advanced laser and/or spectroscopy-based research related to new or existing technologies, product applications, or new products.
  8. Participates in intra-company teams such as Audit, Safety, Recreation, etc…

Qualifications: (in order of importance)

  • MS in Optical Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, E.E., M.E. or equivalent work experience with optical-based analytical instrumentation and project/personnel management experience.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience designing optical, mechanical-optical, electro-optical, chemical, or spectroscopic systems for process control instrumentation.  Low light level detection technology experience is desirable.
  • A strong track record of leadership and supervisory experience required.
  • Organizational and project management skills are required. Works well in a dynamic, cross-functional, multi-disciplinary team environment.
  • Requires direct hands-on design skills in a relevant engineering discipline for an opto-mechanical technology with significant electrical hardware and software signal analysis and controls.
  • Proficiency with modern design tools to support some elements of mechanical, optical, statistical, electrical, etc… engineering is expected.
  • Proficient in the use of standard Microsoft Office tools.
