Manufacturing Engineer - Automation of High-Power Diode Manufacturing

The Manufacturing Engineer – Automation is responsible for Coherent|DILAS automated stations in all manufacturing groups. This includes the design and build of new stations, the improvement and maintenance of existing stations, the implementation of new product on new stations as well as troubleshooting. Automation stations need to automate optical assembly and alignment as well as test of high power diode systems. Such diode systems are used in a variety of markets such as medical devices, directed energy and industrial applications. This position will have the ability to work in a self-directed way creating better efficiencies for the site in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.


  • Create complex assembly stations that combine precise, repeatable component placement, active alignment and metrology of laser beam quality
  • Specify robotic manipulators and end effectors, cameras, sensors and optics
  • Develop software applications to assemble and align laser modules
  • Build prototypes and complete validation testing to project milestones
  • Transfer new assembly stations and processes to manufacturing
  • Transfer new assembly stations from overseas to the US – extended periods of stays overseas (Germany) might be required
  • Deliver project assignments to schedule in a multi-project environment
  • Create and improve stations to increase throughput of manufacture while maintaining fidelity and quality of the product
  • Stay current with market and technology developments including market trends, new technologies and competitive products

Education and Work Experience:

Desired Knowledge and Skills

  • Knowledge of optics and micro-optics highly valuable
  • Working knowledge of high power diodes


  • BS in engineering, computer science, physics or equivalent discipline required. MS preferred. Equivalent experience can substitute degree.
  • 2+ years of experience in automation development required.
  • US citizenship or Green Card is required.
