Job Description: 

The Optics Mechanical Engineer III is responsible for the coordination and technical leadership of electronic hardware strategies and the mechanical design and development of customer products.

We are looking for a talented and experienced Opto-Mechanical Engineer to help design precise Opto-mechanical systems. You will work closely with other members of the cross-functional team to understand and define the Opto-mechanical requirements of your designs in the context of the larger system, and develop the necessary processes to implement the design. This role requires a keen attention to detail, and strong cross-functional interaction skills. Optical raytrace experience (FRED/Zemax) is preferred as well as Finite element analysis capabilities (thermal and/or structural modeling). A BSME degree is preferred.

Essential Functions and Competencies 

Design and document electronic hardware for customer products and related electronics, with management direction, to meet both the customers’ requirements and manufacturing requirements.

  • Provide assistance and team leadership to the Mechanical Design, PCB Design, Functional Test and ICT test for product, test and tooling development.
  • Perform evaluation of quality measurements on electronic designs in accordance with a verification plan.
  • Create documentation related to an electronic design project.
  • Contact and work with hardware, software and equipment vendors.
  • Follow project plan; Report project status to leadership.
  • Assist in the coordination of electronic hardware engineering strategies for customers.
  • Assist in project proposals and associated cost estimates.
  • Participate in the development of advanced/new technologies.
  • Participate in research and development for new design methods and tools.
  • Assist with Design for Excellence (DFX) reviews and create necessary documentation.
  • Develop an understanding of DFX philosophy and promote with customers.
  • With management guidance, work with customers to understand requirements regarding a product design.
  • Communicate with customer technical personnel regarding technical issues.
  • Work with Sustaining Engineering (product, process, test and quality) to develop products that leverage manufacturing and test processes.
  • Communicate technical challenges and work with peers to create and implement solutions.
  • Participate in a continuous improvement activity with complete documentation, including a follow up review with the team in a presentation format.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrate a basic engineering level understanding of optics electronic components, circuits and systems and troubleshooting; Ability to utilize this level of understanding to creatively and efficiently design products and assemblies based on various applications and technologies.
  • Demonstrate a good understanding of optics mechanism design; Ability to creatively and efficiently design mechanical portions of products, tooling and test fixtures based on various applications and technologies.
  • Ability to make judgments, with management guidance, using sound engineering principles and techniques.
  • Effective organization and prioritization skills.
  • Effective interpersonal skills.
  • Proven ability to complete projects in a timely manner.

Experience

  • 5-15+ years of experience in optics mechanical manufacturing.

 Education Requirements

  • 4 year Engineering or Technical Degree preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience as approved by executive management.
