Primary Job Function:
Opto-mechanical Engineer – Design, model, analyze, prototype, and develop opto-mechanical systems with broad expertise of laser, imaging, illumination, and precision optical mounting techniques and their applications in various field, including medical devices.
- Overall responsibility and technical expertise for precision opto-mechanical and structural assemblies and product chassis (ensuring they are designed to spec / work with vendors to have them manufactured / in-lab setup / availability / test functionality).
- Lead the design development and implement a manufacturing validation strategy to address product, process and test method and release to manufacturing.
- Perform detailed analysis to ensure product performance, reliability and manufacturability in addition to documenting the design, development, and validation processes.
- Produce design packages for vendors including optical and mechanical drawings with specification, tolerance, and special process steps.
- Provide innovative solutions and direct support to achieve design project milestones.
- Collaborates within multidisciplinary teams to achieve project milestones.
Primary Requirements:
- BS in Mechanical Engineering with a minimum of 7 or more years of experience, 2 years in the medical device industry preferred. MS with minimum of 5 years of experience.
- Working knowledge of: Optical design, enclosures, structural, mechanical, heat transfer, scanner systems, precision machined components, die cast, and plastics.
- Strong in SolidWorks or similar CAD tools (Top-Down Design, Assemblies, Component design), FEA, and GD&T Tolerance Analysis.
- Demonstrated ability to solve complex design and engineering problems with minimal assistance, while drawing inputs from Manufacturing, Quality, Regulatory, and Clinical functions.
- Design for manufacturability, assembly, and / or reliability (thermal, vibration, shock) Manufacturing process development for medical equipment.
- Design control; verification and validation, design transfer.
- Experience operating within a highly regulated industry.
- Demonstrated ability to facilitate, mentor, train, coach, and lead others.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with Opto-mechanical design for diode lasers and LED and UV light sources.
- Experience with Optical Coherence Tomography; 3D and scanning imaging; ophthalmic microscope systems, ultrasound imaging and probe design.
- Experience with FDA and international ISO regulations pertaining to design control requirements for medical devices.
Qualifications
- Demonstrate a basic engineering level understanding of optics electronic components, circuits and systems and troubleshooting; Ability to utilize this level of understanding to creatively and efficiently design products and assemblies based on various applications and technologies.
- Demonstrate a good understanding of optics mechanism design; Ability to creatively and efficiently design mechanical portions of products, tooling and test fixtures based on various applications and technologies.
- Ability to make judgments, with management guidance, using sound engineering principles and techniques.
- Effective organization and prioritization skills.
- Effective interpersonal skills.
- Proven ability to complete projects in a timely manner.
- Ability to support a 24/7 global business operation as required.

- Understanding of and ability to use continuous improvement tools.
- Knowledge of schematic capture tools, including but not limited to: Cadence OrCad, Cadence Concept, Mentor Design Architect, Mentor Design Capture, Mentor DX Designer, Veribest, Innoveda.
- Strong presentation and communication skills, both written and verbal with internal and external customers.
- Available for travel up to 5% of the time, including day and overnight travel as required.
Experience
- 0-5+ years of experience in optics mechanical manufacturing, developing electronic hardware and software.
Education Requirements
- 4 year Engineering or Technical Degree preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience as approved by executive management.
