ASML in Wilton CT is seeking an Optical Engineer / Physicist in the Optical Modules Development Group USto work with a multi-discipline engineering team to define and develop optical / photonic sensor systems and/or test equipment used within ASML’s photolithography and/or metrology equipment. These systems typically include light sources, detectors, optical / electro-optical components, fiber optics, electronics and signal processing SW.  Understanding the components in their relation to the sensor system function and understanding the interaction with the rest of the metrology or lithography system is of fundamental importance.



The main focus of this position will be:

  • Develop clear understanding of the physical operation of high end optical sensors;
  • Using combination of standard tools (CodeV, FRED, Lumerical FDTD) and modeling in a MATLAB environment, generate accurate physical optics models to predict high end sensors performance;
  • Use developed modeling to support design refinements, nominal predictions and tolerancing.
  • Decomposition of top-level system requirements into lower level module, sub-module, or component level design specifications for product or test equipment towards the engineering team;
  • Deriving specifications for module, sub-module, or test equipment consistent with our manufacturing practices;
  • Use developed models to support proto build validation and production build factory and field issues resolution.
  • Preparation of leading system engineer documentation (Element Performance Specifications, Element Design Specifications, Test Performance Specification; Test Analysis Reports) through review, release and change control;
  • Support preparation of design reviews for the development team;
  • Write engineering procedure and train technicians to efficiently transfer the build/ alignment & test process to manufacturing.
  • Supporting systems in the factory and in the field, by being able to relate observed sensor anomalies to potential system defects;
  • Clearly communicating progress and status of ongoing technical activities to senior management;
  • Understanding how the performance of the sensor system affects the performance of ASMLs equipment;

Some travel ( ~ 10%) to Europe, Asia, and within the US can be expected. 


Minimum MS in Optical Engineering, or Physics with an emphasis on optical design and physical optics modeling and computation.  A Ph.D in optical engineering or optical physics is preferred.  Candidates with MS in optical engineering or optical physics with up to 3 years experience in optical design and/or physical optics modeling will be considered.


Candidate must:

  • Experience with optical design and tolerance of optical systems.
  • In depth experience with at least 2 of the 3 items list: CodeV and/or Zemax; FRED and/or ASAP; MATLAB.
  • Be able to understand the physical operation of complex optical sensors and generate detailed modeling and simulation of their output signals. For example sensors that use a moiré type of detection and can resolve less than 1:10000.
  • Have strong written and oral communicative skills and a commitment to achieving results on time;
  • Demonstrated “team player” with a quality orientation and interpersonal skills;
  • Be able to interface with multidisciplinary groups and work effectively in a team and be willing to take on responsibility, follow through and keep multiple simultaneous assignments on schedule;
  • Be able to quickly acquire technical knowledge from documentation and on-the-job training and be capable of thoroughly investigating analytically technical issues.


The Optical Sensors & Metrology DevelopmentGroup in Wilton CT is seeking a well-rounded engineer with direct experience in optical engineering.  The optical modules developed for ASML’s products will include sources, detectors, geometric/diffractive optics and electro-optic components.  This position will require skills in optical systems engineering: specific to the optical lithography or semi-conductor industry.
