The Optical Design Engineer will design and develop new lenses and reflectors related to electro-optical mechanical assemblies for illumination and signals, as well as revise existing products to support market needs.  


  • Minimum Bachelor of Science in Optics/Physics/ Electrical Engineering
  • 3-7 years of experience with Optical Design
  • Optics software Lighttools (preferred)
  • Some presentation skills (written and verbal)
  • Experience with LED technology
  • Experience using Integrating Sphere and Gonio-photometer
  • Experience basic lab tools
  • Experience with lighting products 

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Optical design of lenses and reflectors related to electro-optomechanical assemblies for illumination and signals. Experience with Lighttools a plus.
  • Applies engineering knowledge to specify and design optical components using optical first order analysis, simulations, prototyping and testing
  • Demonstrates knowledge of LED lighting/signals standards and guidelines
  • Generates Test plans and DOE for optical characterization of lighting and signal products for design and validation
  • Properly use test equipment including integrating sphere, photogoniometer, electronics equipment and thermal chambers.
  • Support Optics Lab in testing and developing new test methods when needed
  • Develops functional prototypes and conducts laboratory testing to determine both product reliability and performance specifications
  • Communicates findings in both peer reviews and detailed technical reports
  • Supports manufacturing of existing product lines by communicating issues, generating engineering change orders, collaborating on process improvements, etc.
  • Achieves deliverables on time and is responsible to meet group commitments
  • Participates in customer visits
  • Interacts with LED suppliers and material vendors
