The selected candidate will perform some or all the following duties. Additional duties may be required: 

The primary role of this position is to provide optical design and analysis on various aerospace programs. These programs include space imaging systems ranging from UV to LWIR regions of the spectrum. 

The optical designer will be part of a highly skilled technical team developing these imaging systems. Tasks include optical engineering product deliveries such as: 

  • Optical designs of advanced telescopes, interferometers, and unique optical calibration, alignment, assembly tooling and test-sets 
  • Optical budgets and sensitivities including wavefront error, MTF, line of sight, coating optimization, and throughput. 
  • Optical requirements and specifications for imaging systems, assemblies, component drawings etc 
  • Classical optical analysis and tolerances for manufacturing and optical alignments. 
  • Optical modeling, analysis, and metrology support during Assembly, Integration, and Test. 
  • Other system-level modeling, such as: glint, spectral tuning/splitting, polarization, phase retrieval, image simulation, radiometry and signal calculations. 
  • Support the development of optical technologies and architectural concepts to support the company’s current and new business opportunities. 
  • Presentation of optical designs and analysis to customers at technical interchange meetings and program reviews 
  • Perform and coordinate system level trades with mechanical engineering and detector development to arrive at mutually agreeable spec compliant solutions to technical problems. 
  • Ability to work in a team environment requiring communication, technical writing, and presentation skills 

Required Experience

  • Bachelors degree in Optical Engineering, Physics, Image Science Engineering, or a related technical discipline with 12+ years of related experience or- an MS Degree in Optical Engineering, Physics, Image Science Engineering or a related technical discipline with 9+ years of related experience or- a PHD in Optical Engineering, Physics, Image Science Engineering, or a related technical discipline with 6 + years of related experience. 
  • Experience in optical engineering 
  • Experience working in the aerospace industry 
  • Experience in Optical Systems requirements management and performance verification 
  • Working knowledge of basic optical manufacturing test processes such as interferometric and spectral response measurements. 
  • Proficiency working with CodeV and/or Zemax software tools 
  • US Citizen 

Desired Skills

  • TS/SCI Clearance 
  • Working knowledge of FRED, ASAP, MATLAB 
  • Exposure to Systems Engineering standards, processes and disciplines
