We have an opening for an experienced Optical Design Engineer.  You will be responsible foroptical systems design, modeling, analysis, and engineering for an array of situations including high energetic laser systems, diagnostics, and high fidelity optical systems.  Your scope of work will involve parallel tasks with broadly-defined priorities.  This position is in the Laser Systems Engineering & Operations (LSEO) Division of the Engineering Directorate. LSEO provides support to National Ignition Facility & Photon Science (NIF& PS) Directorate.

This position will be filled at either the SES.3 or SES.4 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.
Essential Duties
  • Perform complex optical systems design and engineering with configuration management.
  • Design and analyze complex optical component and systems specifications.
  • Define complex optical requirements from physics requirements.
  • Perform conceptual and preliminary designs of optical systems and tolerance analysis.
  • Define high energy laser transport and diagnostic optical systems and interface requirements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
In Addition at the SES.4 Level
  • Serve as subject matter expert in optical design knowledge and strategies.
  • Conduct advanced research into stray light analysis and mitigation and develop innovative methods that contribute to advancement of knowledge.
  • Provide optical technical leadership for the sub-systems and contribute to design reviews. 
  • Master’s degree in Optical Engineering, Physics or other technical area, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Advanced knowledge of optical design and significant experience solving optical problems.
  • Significant experience in interfacing with customer product requirements.
  • Significant experience in optical specification and production techniques.
  • Advanced knowledge of Code V or equivalent optical design software (ZEMAX, FRED, OSLO).
  • Significant experience interacting and cooperating with all levels of technical staff, managers, and vendors.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills for leading and managing small, multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Advanced verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical information and provide advice to management.
In Addition at the SES.4 Level
  • PhD in Optical Engineering, Physics or related field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Subject matter expert knowledge of optical design of novel systems and significant experience and knowledge in innovative optical concept and architecture generation.
  • Expert communication, facilitation, and collaboration skills necessary to present, explain, and advise senior management and/or external sponsors.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience writing technical specifications and statements of work.
  • Experience in optical design and engineering of high energy laser systems and laser system diagnostics.
  • Experience in optical propagation and ghost modeling.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.

Security Clearance:  This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.  Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.  If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.
