Position: Optical Engineer Job Opportunity at Genesis Engineering Solutions Inc.
Genesis Engineering Solutions Inc, has an immediate need for a full time optical engineer at its Lanham, MD location. This position will be supporting the design, development and analysis of optical based systems for both internal and external programs.
  • The successful applicant will have duties that can involve the following areas
  • Work independently or with engineering teams to design, analyze and characterize space based optical instrumentation.
  • Optical design of both reflective and refractive satellite based optical systems.
  • Analysis of both in-field and out-of-field sources of stray light in the optical systems.
  • Flow-down of system level requirements to design based requirements.
  • Optical System Sensitivity Analysis and the development of Error Budgets for optical mechanical systems
  • Estimate the “as-built” performance of optical systems in operating space based environments.
  • Integrate optical based Ground Support Equipment into optical test environments.
  • Participate in the testing and analysis of optical-based systems in thermal vacuum tests simulating the environment of space.
  • Write and present technical based material to engineers both within and outside of your discipline.
  • Participate in weekly meetings as well as design reviews of space based optical systems.
  • US citizenship required to gain immediate access to NASA Goddard Space Flight center or to other secured facilities.
  • Bachelors of Science in Physics or Optics, and (completed bachelors OR in process with expected graduation date)
  • A strong background in University level Physics, Optics, and Engineering.
  • Familiarity with Optical Design/Analysis programs such as Code V, Zemax, FRED, TracePro…
  • A basic understanding of optical design, analysis and radiometric principles.
  • Handle and work with optical elements such as mirrors, lenses, fiber optics, etc.
  • Operate basic optical instrumentation such as optical sources and spectroradiometers.
  • Some programming experience would be beneficial.
  • Ability to operate both independently and in team- based environments.
