Responsibility:

The Optical Engineer Intern is responsible for supporting the optical engineering department with basic design projects, product testing, and component fabrication. In addition, the position will help support mechanical and electrical engineering departments with laboratory testing. The position is a 3 month summer internship.

Optical Engineer Job Duties:

• Assists with metrology and design methodology of various aspects of current optical group projects
• Assists and leads laboratory testing and assembly of optical components/sub-assemblies
• Participates in product testing and test report preparation as required
• Assists in providing optical specifications and drawings to vendors and supply chain partners
• Supply chain and vendor interaction with various activities such as requesting quotes, purchasing process flow and incoming quality inspections
• Attends and participates in project focused group meetings

This position will report in a matrix-managed environment and will be capable of simultaneously managing multiple projects. Candidate will be responsible for successfully identifying project requirements and meeting associated deadlines.

Qualifications:

Required: Optical engineering student

Desired Experience:
• Optical Design software experience (Zemax, CodeV, etc)
• Mathematical modeling tool (MATLAB, Mathematica, MathCad, etc)
• A proven ability to communicate across departments
• Effective at processing information and analyzing data, drawing on knowledge, judgment and experience to recognize potential issues or opportunities.
• Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
• Ability to process laboratory test results and generate reports with conclusions and recommendations
• Good written and verbal communication skills

The interns will be part of a 3-intern team spread out across the Mechanical, Electrical, and Optical disciplines. We are looking for a Junior/Senior level undergraduates or graduate candidates with laboratory experience. RealD is the leading stereoscopic cinema projection company in the world. Our technology lights up more than 25,000 movie theatre screens with cutting edge polarization based stereoscopic imagery. RealD is a dynamic workplace where candidates will have an opportunity to work on cutting edge optical technology with application primarily in stereoscopic 3D displays. Our new building in Boulder houses our research and development teams comprised of optical scientists and development engineers. Our facilities include four optical laboratories, 3D printing capabilities, a full machine shop, and 3 movie theatres.
