For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have an opening for an Optical Engineer with an emphasis in optical production. You will be responsible for defining optical system designs for production and commissioning including specifying optical components, interfacing with mechanical efforts, and documentation. Scope of work involves parallel tasks with broadly-defined priorities. This position is in the Laser Systems Engineering & Operations (LSEO) Division of the Engineering Directorate. LSEO provides support to National Ignition Facility & Photon Science (NIF& PS) Directorate.

This position will be filled at either the SES.2 or SES.3 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.

Essential Duties

  • Interpret optical designs for mechanical engineering efforts.
  • Document and configure management of optical systems for build and analysis.
  • Specify optical components; identify and resolve moderately complex optical issues.
  • Document optical components for fabrication.
  • Interact with Optics Procurement Group and vendors to determine the feasibility and manufacturability of components.
  • Perform tolerancing analysis of optical components.
  • Contribute to the fulfillment of technical projects and organizational objectives and functions as a member of a multidisciplinary team of optical engineers and CAD designers.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

In Addition at the SES.3 Level

  • Perform complex optical systems design and engineering.
  • Identify component fabrication and testing strategies.
  • Provide timely and effective status for multiple projects in parallel.

  • Bachelor’s (BA/BS) degree in Optical Engineering, Physics or related field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of optical design principles and engineering.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret optical and mechanical specifications.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Code V or equivalent optical design software (ZEMAX, FRED, OSLO).
  • Comprehensive knowledge in configuration management of requirements and system changes.
  • Experience working in an optical systems laboratory.
  • Experience working in a team environment which includes scientists, engineers, technicians, and designers.
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical information.

In Addition at the SES.3 Level

  • Advanced knowledge and significant experience in optical production techniques, optical tolerancing of components, and optical system design.
  • Advanced knowledge and significant experience in commissioning optical systems for high energy laser, short pulse laser, and imaging systems.
  • Advanced verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical information and provide advice to management.

Desired Qualifications

  • Masters (MA/MS) degree or PhD in Optical Engineering, Physics, or related field.
  • Extensive optical production experience and production problem-solving and detailed knowledge and experience of optical materials and environmental interactions.
  • Advanced experience with additional optical design codes such as ZEMAX and OSLO, for complex modeling of laser systems.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.

Anticipated Clearance Level:  Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter.
