Job Description: 

PURPOSE:

The Optics Scientist will participate in or lead programs and projects. This position will be responsible for light management modeling, lens design and optical system modeling and design. This position will also be responsible for seeking out new opportunities in product development.

EDUCATION AND/OR PROFESSIONAL LICENSE(s):

Ph.D. degree in Optics or Ph.D. degree in Physics, Material Science or related fields with a strong emphasis on optics and visual science.

EXPERIENCE:

Five or more years of related experience in industry or university research is desirable.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: 

  • Government funded program experience including proposal writing;
  • Background in laser light management;
  • Working knowledge of ophthalmic and geometric optics;
  • Experience with optical modeling and lens design software such as ZEMAX and Code V;
  • Leadership experience in projects/programs;
  • Experience with optical thin films.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to obtain and hold a “Secret” Clearance.

CONTACT WITH OTHERS: 

Internal: Position requires daily contact with members of project team including lead engineers, quality engineers, optical technicians, documentation control, test engineers, technicians, model makers, and assembly technicians. Utilizes the resources of numerous functional groups within the facility to achieve the program objectives. 

External: Contact with individuals outside the facilities is project-dependent and includes individuals at other Gentex facilities, vendors, subcontractors, customers, and FAA. Must be able to obtain and keep secret level security clearance.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL/COMMUNICATION REQUIREMENTS: 

Employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear; and taste or smell. The employee may lift and/or move up to 20 lbs. Specific vision abilities required by the job may include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The individual must have a high level of comprehension, and a high level of general, verbal, written, and numerical intelligence.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: 

Works majority of the day in a climate controlled environment, with the exception of or otherwise specified, performing work in the warehouse or manufacturing areas which are subject to changes in temperature and/or noise.
