POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH ASSOCIATE / RESEARCH FELLOW IN OPTICAL SIGNAL PROCESSING
CUDOS – THE CENTRE FOR ULTRAHIGH BANDWIDTH DEVICES FOR OPTICAL SYSTEMS
SCHOOL OF PHYSICS
REFERENCE NO. 1402/0614

The Centre for Ultrahigh bandwidth Devices for Optical Systems (CUDOS) group at the University of Sydney currently has a vacancy for an experienced researcher in the field of optical signal processing for coherent communication systems working in the Terabit per Second (Tb/S) flagship project. This is one of six flagship projects in this Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence. The Tb/S project aims to address the limitations of optical bandwidth, footprint and energy efficiency in next generation communication systems by developing compact optical chip signal processors that harness nonlinear propagation effects to enable broadband wavelength conversion, parametric amplification, phase conjugation, and signal distortion compensation in long distance fibre links. Novel techniques and methodologies will be developed to process higher bit rate signals encoded with advanced modulation formats and polarisation multiplexing.

You will join an established team within the CUDOS Centre of Excellence to perform research using the established communication test bed facility, and will involve collaboration with CUDOS partners.

You will be responsible for:
• developing a research program in optical signal processing and related areas
• preparing and presenting scientific results in papers and conferences
• supervising undergraduate and graduate research students
• assisting in recruitment of research students
• assisting in management and planning of the CUDOS Tb/S program.

To be successful in this position you will have:
• a PhD in Physics, Electrical Engineering or a related discipline
• a research track record in optical communications and/or photonic signal processing with substantial research experience in optical communications
• published research as sole author or in collaboration.
• demonstrated skills in experimental guided wave optics, nonlinear optical propagation experiments and optical communication systems
• experience in presenting seminars at research institutions and conferences
• excellent oral and written communication skills, including the capacity to work in a multi-skilled team
• demonstrated ability to conduct research/scholarly activities under limited supervision either independently or as a member of a team
• demonstrated ability to supervise students at undergraduate level
• for appointment at Level B: substantive level of postdoctoral experience and strong evidence of independent research in addition to experience in supervision of research students.

Desirable will be experience in some of the followings: on-chip nonlinear optical processing for next generation communication systems, ultrafast laser systems, theoretical and numerical nonlinear optical pulse propagation, test and measurement of coherent communication systems and advanced data modulation formats, signal processing techniques for next generation optical communications, long distance and high data capacity signal transmission, and optical networking.

The position is full-time fixed term for two years subject to the completion of a satisfactory probation period for new appointees.

Remuneration package: up to $110K p.a. including Level A- B base salary range $79K-$93K, leave loading and up to 17% superannuation. Visa sponsorship and some assistance towards travelling cost may be available if required. Level of appointment will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
